About The Position

This position is accountable for the preparation of various bridge inspections to fulfill the requirements of the Nation Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS); in addition to various bridge technical reports which include routine, element, and special feature inspections, as well as beam damage documentation, field notes for repairs, and final inspections for various bridge improvement projects. This position is occasionally assigned to respond to bridge incidents and assess damage for repairs during all hours of the day. It will be responsible for coordinating with various partners to secure necessary equipment, traffic control, and other logistical support for all inspections. This position occasionally assists the Operations Supervisors II leading the district Bridge and Moveable Bridge Units with oversight and direction of the crews assigned to repair the bridges, as well as staffing the Moveable Bridges.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • District-wide travel.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at extreme heights over land and water.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of engineering experience in bridge design, bridge inspections, bridge maintenance, and/or bridge construction.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Efficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Successful completion of the NHI Course - Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges.
  • Registration as an Illinois Bridge Inspection Team Leader.
  • Extensive Knowledge of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), NBIS, and Illinois Stakeholder Involvement Plan (SIP) Manual.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures complete and accurate inspections, evaluating, and reporting of bridge conditions in accordance with federal and state regulations and guidelines.
  • Evaluates and recommends corrective action to alleviate bridge maintenance problems as part of all bridge inspections.
  • Prepares detailed bridge repair documents, including field notes, bridge beam damage reports and final inspections of bridge improvement projects.
  • Assists the Moveable Bridge and Bridge Maintenance Operations Supervisors in the oversight and management of the negotiated rate staff.
  • Projects short and long-range bridge maintenance needs.
  • Ensures proper documentation of bridge operations is prepared in a timely manner, including timekeeping, storekeeping, invoice processing, as well as entering data into the Asset Management Program (AMP) System.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
