About The Position

This role involves erecting and maintaining traffic signs, related poles and hardware, pavement markings, and other traffic control devices. The position requires receiving and interpreting Traffic By-Laws, plans, diagrams, or instructions for sign and pavement marking installations. The Traffic Handyworker 1 will assist supervisors and technical staff in laying out work, determining requirements, and interpreting drawings and specifications. Responsibilities include contacting utility representatives to locate services, keeping records of work done, and liaising with the public, homeowners, and contractors to resolve issues. The role also involves operating a vehicle to transport personnel and materials, providing work direction and training to other staff, operating portable spray painting equipment, and performing maintenance and minor repairs on equipment. Additionally, the position requires operating pneumatic-powered tools and hand tools such as jack hammers, core drills, grinders, power drills, and banders. The Traffic Handyworker 1 will also perform other related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Considerable experience relating to all aspects of traffic control, sign and pavement marking installations.
  • Considerable experience in the safe and efficient operation and use of all vehicles, equipment, specialized attachments and materials related to the duties of this position, included but not limited to working on a ladder.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and be qualified to obtain the necessary City equipment operating permits.
  • Knowledge of sign regulations and specifications, including the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Ontario Traffic Manuals, and Highway Traffic Act.
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and must be physically capable of performing all responsibilities.
  • Must be available to work shifts, weekends, overtime and work at various locations.
  • Ability to prepare and complete all relevant forms, schedules, checklists, daily activity reports, etc.
  • Ability to deal courteously and ensure good customer service with community groups, members of the public and other staff.

Responsibilities

  • Liaises with homeowners, general public, contractors, etc., with respect to work carried out and to resolve issues
  • Operates a vehicle to transport personnel and materials to work site
  • Provides work direction and training to other staff
