GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:The Traffic Engineering Technician performs highly technical work to support the traffic engineering, traffic operations, and traffic utilities functions of the Public Works and Development Department’s Traffic Operations Program. Exercises a high level of independence and discretion in problem-solving and resolution, and through assignment of complex projects that require a high degree of technical expertise working within complex traffic systems. Examples include working with a high level of independence in troubleshooting and resolving traffic signal malfunction issues, resetting or reinstalling signal components, and updating school zone flashers and other travel time devices.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge Manual on Uniformed Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and general practices for installing.
  • Knowledge of Colorado Utility Regulations and “CO 811” Locating process.
  • Knowledge of data collection practices related to traffic studies.
  • Ability to review and interpret engineered drawings, plans, schematics, directions, and device specifications.
  • Ability to use hand tools such as picks, shovels, and testing equipment.
  • Ability to utilize subsurface utility electronic location equipment.
  • Ability to use electronic testing equipment to inspect, calibrate, or determine proper functioning of device.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and a variety of computer systems and applications.
  • Ability to learn and utilize GIS and mapping procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • At least four (4) years of relevant experience in traffic signs, markings, and traffic signals is required.
  • A combination of education and experience that satisfy the job requirements may be considered.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and background check.
  • Possession of a valid Class “R” Colorado Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within two weeks of appointment.

Nice To Haves

  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician Level III Certifications are preferred, or the ability to obtain the same within one year of employment.
  • GIS and technical drawing experience is preferred.
  • Subsurface Utility Location Certification is preferred, or the ability to obtain the same within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts field collection of data including roadway traffic volumes, traffic device information, and traffic utility. Includes physical field deployment of traffic devices utilized to collect data.
  • Inspects and processes data from traffic data collection devices. Performs preliminary analysis of collected data and makes recommendations to supervisor.
  • Reviews requests for utility locates of traffic and traffic signal related utilities. Performs on-call duties on a rotational basis for utility locate services. Manages on-call schedules and contractors for utility locates.
  • Performs physical Traffic utility location using a subsurface utility location device.
  • Inspects, measures, and collects data to document and report traffic utility changes and assists in improvements to mapping traffic-related utilities in geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Manages traffic data devices deployment schedule and general upkeep of devices. Performs installation of traffic related devices, traffic device software, and related electronic communications.
  • Assists in care, maintenance, and active monitoring of functional status of Arapahoe County Advanced Traffic Management System, closed circuit camera feeds, traffic signals, traffic data collection devices, traffic signs, striping, and other electronic and non-electronic traffic devices. May perform minor electronic repairs on traffic devices.
  • Receives, processes, inspects, and collects data, prepares documentation, researches and compiles reports, and responds to traffic-related requests.
  • Inspects signs, striping, signals, and other traffic-related devices installed by others for conformance with approved plans and permits. May accept the work or document and make recommendations to Traffic Operations Manager for any repairs and acceptances.
  • Documents, coordinates, processes, and assists with maintaining approved Arapahoe County sign/ striping/signal/fiber inventories and mapping in GIS.
  • Compiles information and prepares sketches for plans / work orders.
  • Communicates and coordinates with Road & Bridge Division staff regarding assigned work orders.
  • Performs data analysis of performance measures and reports to supervisor.
  • Performs GIS entry and edits of traffic-related information and infrastructure data.
