About The Position

The City of Sunnyvale is recruiting for two Traffic Engineer positions. One position will manage, coordinate, and oversee the City’s Traffic Calming Program, involving resident interaction, data analysis, public outreach, and implementation of traffic calming measures. This role also manages the overall traffic issue request queue. The second position will manage large transportation infrastructure projects from planning through construction, supporting the Transportation Special Projects team. Responsibilities include project advancement, stakeholder coordination, grant management, overseeing consultants, reviewing technical documents, public outreach, and providing technical support to other Public Works divisions. Both positions perform professional traffic engineering work in planning, design, construction, and operation of traffic control equipment and facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering.
  • Two years of experience performing relevant, professional level work in traffic, transportation, or civil engineering.
  • Current registration as a Professional Civil or Traffic Engineer issued by the State of California.
  • Possession of and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of an International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) Level I and Level II Traffic Signal Technician certificates.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Traffix, aaSIDRA, Synchro and/or Crossroads software.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, coordinate, and oversee the City’s Traffic Calming Program.
  • Work with residents on traffic calming requests, collecting and analyzing traffic data.
  • Conduct public outreach and develop/implement traffic calming measures.
  • Manage the traffic issue request queue for all types of requests.
  • Manage, coordinate, and oversee large transportation infrastructure projects from planning through construction.
  • Advance projects through various stages of development and implementation.
  • Represent the City in coordination with stakeholders and partner agencies.
  • Apply for and manage grant funding related to projects.
  • Oversee consultant teams.
  • Review technical plans, specifications, and reports.
  • Provide traffic-related technical support to other Public Works divisions.
  • Perform neighborhood traffic studies in keeping with the City's adopted "Traffic Calming" policy.
  • Work with neighborhood groups in identifying problems and potential solutions.
  • Organize and conduct neighborhood meetings and attempt to develop consensus on alternatives and implementation of actions.
  • Provide support for the City's appointed Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC).
  • Research bicycle issues, develop improvement plans and prepare reports to the BPAC.
  • Disseminate information regarding the City's Transportation Demand Management and vehicular air quality issues.
  • Write memos, correspondence, and reports regarding a wide variety of transportation issues, projects, and programs.
  • Prepare specifications, plans, estimates, and reports pertaining to the construction, maintenance, and operation of traffic engineering facilities and street lighting systems.
  • Perform professional engineering duties and advise subdividers and developers on traffic engineering and street lighting requirements.
  • Prepare recommendations for Council action on speed limit ordinances.
  • Meet with representatives of other governmental agencies, major employers, and citizen groups to discuss traffic problems.
  • Act in an advisory capacity to other City departments and divisions on matters related to traffic control and safety.
  • Supervise and assist in field traffic engineering studies, topographical and construction surveys for streets, traffic control, and traffic flow developments.
  • Perform construction inspection work requiring specialized traffic engineering knowledge.
  • Administer and coordinate the repair and maintenance by contract personnel of traffic signal equipment and review and approve invoices for payments.
  • Design traffic striping and signing for pedestrian and vehicular movement.
  • Perform traffic signal system programming and operation tasks, and conduct limited maintenance of the traffic signal system.
  • May provide supervision to contract signal maintenance personnel.
