About The Position

Make an impact: As a Traffic Engineer, you will play a vital role in supporting the operations and enhancements of the City’s traffic signal system, school zone flashers, interconnect system and streetlights. In this position, you will collaborate closely with the Senior Traffic Engineer, Traffic Signal Supervisor, and Electricians to operate, maintain, and modernize the City’s transportation system to deliver on the City’s commitment to a safe and efficient transportation system. Learn and grow: As a key member of the Traffic Engineering & Traffic Signals team, you will work alongside the Senior Traffic Engineer, Traffic Signal Supervisor, and Traffic Signal Electricians. Requirements

  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver’s license, or the ability to obtain an Oregon license within 30 days of residency and meet the City of Salem’s driving standards.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or a related field, and six years of experience in a related field, or any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
  • Professional Civil Engineer (PE) License required (or ability to obtain a State of Oregon license required within one year of appointment to the position).

Responsibilities

  • Manage traffic signal operations, including data collection and analysis to support retiming efforts aimed at improving safety and efficiency across the City’s corridors.
  • Work collaboratively with external agencies, including Keizer, Marion County, and ODOT, to ensure effective signal maintenance and operations in accordance with the Traffic Control Center Grant Agreement.
  • Coordinate with the Engineering Department and Traffic Signal Electricians on capital projects, providing technical support throughout the design and construction phases.
  • Assist Development Services in reviewing traffic signal elements during the development process, ensuring compliance with City standards and regulations.
  • Represent the Traffic Engineering team at project meetings and respond to community concerns related to traffic signal operations.
  • Perform other traffic engineering tasks as needed to support departmental goals and priorities.
