About The Position

WSP USA is seeking a Traffic Engineer to join its New England team. The role may be based in Boston, Massachusetts; Glastonbury, Connecticut; or Providence, Rhode Island. The position provides technical assistance and guidance for traffic analysis, improvement planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets, highways, transportation networks, adjacent land uses, and their interactions with other transportation modes and terminals. Work includes traffic engineering analyses and design and concept development for roadways, intersections, Complete Streets, roadside safety, work zones, intelligent transportation systems, and traffic signals and timing. The role is responsible for delivering work that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. The Traffic Engineer contributes across project phases, from concept development and preliminary and final design through procurement, construction, and operations. The position involves investigations and inspections, corridor and intersection improvement design, ITS communications and signal systems, traffic studies and operational analyses, technical reporting and presentations, and coordination with colleagues, clients, sub-consultants, and transportation authorities. The engineer is expected to stay current with traffic engineering practices, work independently with minimal oversight, support junior team members, and adhere to quality, ethical, and company policy standards. Project needs may require schedules extending beyond a typical workweek and occasional travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and prior traffic design experience.
  • Professional Engineer license; preferably in one of the New England states.
  • Extensive knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, processes, and design/build, including preliminary and final design, roadway functional layouts, traffic control signals and equipment, capacity and operational analysis, and related communications systems.
  • Experience with roadway planning, design, and construction management, including preliminary and final design of roadways, access and egress, intersections, pedestrian elements, and bicycle accommodations.
  • Project experience involving larger and more complex infrastructure projects, pavement rehabilitation and construction, work-zone traffic control design and work-zone closure traffic analysis, and safety management.
  • Experience preparing cost estimates, particularly for construction costs of traffic design elements, including design costs from conceptual through final design stages.
  • Strong self-leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization skills in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD (including AutoTurn and GuideSign), MicroStation, spreadsheets, and related tools.
  • Strong knowledge of traffic engineering standards and guidelines, including MUTCD, HCM, NACTO, the AASHTO Green Book, and the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide.
  • Proficiency with traffic engineering software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS, Vissim, SignCad, and SIDRA, and data analytics applications such as StreetLight or Replica HQ.
  • Ability to maintain work schedules that meet project-specific requirements and may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Valid driver's license; occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

  • Perform traffic engineering work and investigate and inspect proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, roadside safety measures, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors for conformance with applicable standards, rules, and permits.
  • Develop concepts for intersection and corridor improvements, including near-term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects and studies, coordinating with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Design ITS communications networks and traffic signal improvements to support remote, real-time corridor operations.
  • Apply advanced technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to address safety and functionality and implement future-ready traffic engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic plan reviews, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis.
  • Prepare data visualizations and technical materials, including tables, charts, reports, models, cross-sections, and other illustrations.
