About The Position

A Traffic Control Technician (TCT) in Texas plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and safe flow of traffic. This role involves the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices, managing traffic during road construction or incidents, conducting regular inspections of equipment, coordinating with various departments and crews, ensuring compliance with regulations, and responding to emergencies. The TCT must be able to follow instructions, adapt to changing work environments, possess mechanical aptitude, and have good map reading and communication skills. They are expected to work efficiently, maintain a positive attitude, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least 21 years old
  • Possess a valid Texas driver's license
  • Pre-employment Drug Screen required
  • Ability to accept direction and feedback from Traffic Control Crew Chief and follow through appropriately
  • Ability to adjust to changes in work tasks or environment
  • Ability to read, understand and carry out written instructions and present questions when instructions are unclear
  • Ability to read, understand and carry out verbal instructions and present questions when instructions are unclear
  • Mechanical aptitude, performing routine maintenance and repair on equipment
  • Map reading skills with the ability to find locations, navigate to job sites and navigate back to warehouse
  • Complete deliveries when needed
  • Knowledge of various tools and equipment used in the field and ability to select the appropriate tool or equipment to perform task at hand
  • Ability to operate in an organized and time efficient manner
  • Ability to speak clearly and convey information to others in an effective manner
  • Ability to take direction from Traffic Control Crew Chief or take initiative if exact direction has not been assigned
  • Reading, writing and arithmetic skills

Responsibilities

  • Setting up and maintaining traffic control devices such as traffic signals, road signs, barriers, and pavement markings.
  • Installing new equipment and repairing or replacing damaged items.
  • Implementing temporary traffic control measures to manage and redirect traffic safely during road construction, accidents, or other incidents.
  • Setting up cones, barrels, and signs to guide drivers and ensure roadwork is conducted safely.
  • Regularly inspecting traffic control equipment to ensure proper functioning, including signal timing, sign visibility, and road marking condition.
  • Coordinating with municipal departments, construction crews, and law enforcement to plan and execute traffic control strategies.
  • Ensuring all traffic control measures comply with state and federal regulations, including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Responding quickly to accidents or hazardous conditions to set up appropriate traffic control measures.
  • Arriving at the shop/yard and being prepared to work at the beginning of the shift.
  • Following work instructions to ensure consistent service and product quality.
  • Recommending measures to improve efficiency, service quality, product quality, and safety.
  • Maintaining all work areas, vehicles, and work sites in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Loading and unloading materials and equipment on site.
  • Notifying the Traffic Control Supervisor of any quality or safety-related concerns.
  • Demonstrating initiative by evaluating situations and making decisions based on facts and sound judgments.
  • Acting in a manner that reflects the company's values and principles.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Traffic Control Supervisor.
