About The Position

The Traffic Control Specialist Trainee position is designed to prepare candidates for a future Traffic Control Specialist role through a structured role within the Statewide Traffic Management Center (STMC). This role provides hands-on exposure to traffic operations, traffic analysis, transportation systems, and roadway safety functions. Candidates who are interested in transportation, traffic management, data analysis, roadway operations, and intelligent transportation systems may find this role especially appealing. Individuals who are detail-oriented, technically capable, and eager to learn in a structured operational environment are likely to succeed in this position.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of traffic control principles, practices, and transportation operations.
  • Ability to learn and apply command center operations and functions in a real-time environment.
  • General understanding of operational, policy, and procedural components of a Traffic Management Center.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret traffic data, studies, and operational information.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise summary reports of observations, findings, and accomplishments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency, including the use of common office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to prepare reports, presentations, and communications.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and partner agencies.
  • Extract and organize pertinent information while participating in training sessions and operational meetings.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations that summarize learning applications and project work.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience in related fields (transportation, public safety, dispatch, or a customer service environment).

Responsibilities

  • Participate in all assigned training phases and operational rotations within the Traffic Control Specialist Trainee program.
  • Collect, review, and analyze traffic data to support traffic operations reports and studies.
  • Assist with the development of traffic management center procedures, policies, and operational guidance.
  • Review and test traffic operations software and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications used to monitor traffic flow and support operations (e.g., Roadway Condition Reporting System, Advanced Traffic Management System, Genetec, Traffic Alerts).
  • Support traffic studies related to speed limits, traffic restrictions, safety devices, and operational improvements.
  • Validate traffic volume, vehicle classification, and related field data used for traffic studies and evaluations.
  • Contribute to highway safety evaluations, traffic control device studies, and technical analyses for roadway projects, including pavement marking plans and traffic control plans.
  • Assist with activities related to highway occupancy permits at high traffic volume locations.
  • Learn to operate traffic control center equipment, communication systems, and message devices used to manage traffic and inform travelers.
  • Prepare summary reports and presentations that document training progress, observations, and project work.
  • Attend relevant training sessions and meetings outside the core training program, as required, in preparation for eventual placement into a Traffic Control Specialist position.
