About The Position

This is the second of four levels in the Traffic Control series. Incumbents diagnose, maintain, and repair traffic control systems. Responsibilities may include performing routine maintenance on traffic control systems; repairing failed traffic control devices; programming traffic controllers; and maintaining records of work performed. This position will remain open through August 25, 2026, or until filled.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of signal experience required.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (To be obtained within one year of employment) or IMSA Certification (To be obtained within two years of employment with on-the-job training provided).
  • Knowledge of traffic control practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal and marking layout principles, procedures, and methods.
  • Knowledge of standard uses of traffic control devices.
  • Knowledge of City geography.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping principles.
  • Knowledge of applicable tools and equipment utilized in the traffic control trade.
  • Knowledge of computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic control devices.
  • Skill in performing manual labor.
  • Skill in using and caring for applicable tools and equipment.
  • Skill in reading and comprehending maps.
  • Skill in preparing operational records.
  • Skill in using a computer and related software applications.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, constructs, tests, programs, and sets a variety of traffic signal and control equipment which may include pavement markings, school zone flashers, traffic counters, and/or related traffic control devices.
  • Collects and analyzes traffic data; makes recommendations based on findings.
  • Prepares, processes, and maintains various forms, work orders, operational records, traffic data, and/or other related documents and information.
  • Provides on-call coverage, on a rotating basis, for emergency traffic department issues that occur after hours.
  • Performs other related work as required.
