About The Position

This classification performs various duties associated with traffic signal and street lighting installation, repair and maintenance. Position level and salary will be dependent on qualifications. Employment screenings will be conducted in compliance with applicable federal and Florida Laws. The work environment may include exposure to high noise levels. The position requires the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Work may involve strenuous physical activity under varying climatic conditions and in both indoor and outdoor environments. Ability to climb and descend ladders and work at heights up to 60ft. Periodically required to work other than normal business hours, including weekends and holidays. This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment and continued employment is contingent upon passing pre-employment and employment screenings. An applicant/employee who fails to pass a drug/alcohol screening shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of three (3) years.

Requirements

  • Must successfully pass Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and department-approved agility test.
  • High school diploma, GED or other certificate of competency.
  • Must be able to participate in a standby rotation schedule outside of normal shift hours, with the ability to respond to emergencies within a 2-hour time frame.
  • Must either possess and maintain valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class B (w/ Air Brake endorsement) OR obtain CDL permit prior to employment and obtain the CDL within one hundred twenty (120) days of hire.
  • Electrician I: IMSA Traffic Signal Level I, Certification required, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire date.
  • Electrician II: Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in traffic signal and street lighting installation and maintenance. IMSA Traffic Signal Level II, Certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Electrician III: Five (5) years' experience in traffic signal installation and maintenance. IMSA Traffic Signal Level III, Certification, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Electrician IV: Licensed Journeyman Electrician or a minimum of five (5) years documented work history in the following fields: traffic signal, highway lighting, residential, commercial, or industrial electrical. IMSA Traffic Signal Level III certification.
  • Ability to distinguish colors.
  • Knowledge of traffic signal devices and components.
  • Knowledge of state and local regulations and the manual on traffic signal installations as required by assigned work.
  • Knowledge of the operation of hand and power tools required by assigned work.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, supervisor, and outside agencies.
  • Skill in basic computer operations.
  • Knowledge of electrical and/or electronic systems and components.

Nice To Haves

  • Electrician I – II: One (1) year of traffic signal, street lighting or electrical trade work experience desired.
  • Electrician III: Associates degree in related field desired.
  • Electrician IV: Associates degree in related field desired.

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance, modification, repair, testing and installation of electrical systems and components for traffic signals and highway lighting.
  • Performs emergency repair of traffic signals to mitigate traffic congestion and vehicle accidents.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electronic equipment and instrumentation.
  • Recommends replacement when necessary.
  • Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and installs solar power systems and components.
  • Installs batteries and generators for power backup systems.
  • Performs digging and trenching in the process of installing and repairing underground infrastructure to include junction boxes, conduit and wiring.
  • Executes temporary traffic control plans and maintains safe work zones through proper application of maintenance of traffic devices.
  • Subject to alternate work schedules and serving on a rotating on-call status.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, including participation in emergency or disaster response activities, as required and consistent with the employee’s qualifications, essential job functions, and appliable federal and Florida law.
