About The Position

This position, located at the Pima County Adult Detention Center, requires on-call hours including nights and weekends. This role supervises and participates in the duties of work units providing specialized or advanced maintenance, repair, diagnosis or troubleshooting, construction, fabrication, and preventive maintenance. Requires technical skills, experience, and knowledge in the area of specialization, as well as supervisory and management skills, and active use of technical skills to participate in unique or complex projects. Supervisors are accountable for the activities of assigned staff and ensure services or products of work units comply with written procedures, engineering drawings, specifications, contracts, industry standards, and statutory codes and requirements.

Requirements

  • Five years of journeyman level commercial/industrial building maintenance experience INCLUDING one year of supervisory experience.
  • Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.
  • One year with Pima County as a Trades Maintenance Specialist II or closely-related position as determined by the department head INCLUDING two years lead experience.
  • Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application.
  • Valid driver license is at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Ability to obtain jail pass is required.
  • Pre-employment background checks.
  • Post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems.
  • Some positions may carry the risk of exposure to infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, asbestos or wastewater products, therefore special medical screening prior to or during employment may be necessary to assure employee health and safety.

  • Lift and carry up to seventy-five pounds.
  • Safely operate assigned vehicles and other powered equipment.
  • Work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, cold.

  • Work with or in the presence of obnoxious odors.
  • Work with noxious or potentially hazardous chemicals, compounds or products.
  • Ascend and descend ladders and stairs to reach and work upon elevated or below-grade work platforms and job sites.
  • Differentiate between colors.
  • Hearing Activity - in noisy areas; on a radio; equipment alarms.
  • Speaking Activity - in person, on the phone, on a radio.
  • Vision - operate a motor vehicle, operate machinery, distinguish colors, have depth perception.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum six (6) years experience with/knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, carpentry, general building maintenance, and energy management control and access systems.
  • Experience with/knowledge of applicable building codes and OSHA regulations.
  • Experience in the use and application of computer software including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
  • Experience coordinating construction/remodeling projects including estimating and preparing budgets, and short and long-range maintenance planning.
  • Minimum three (3) years supervisory or lead experience.
  • Some positions may require possession of a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period.
  • Some positions may require Arizona certification as an herbicide/pesticide applicator or backflow device inspector/repair person or installer, etc. at the time of appointment or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and participates in the analysis, repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and vehicles.
  • Supervises skilled fabrication, modifications, and inspections of equipment, systems, and facilities based on technical references or plans.
  • Monitors and ensures proper functioning of equipment and systems through quality control analysis and corrective actions.
  • Maintains detailed records of activity, service, and usage for supported vehicles, equipment, and systems.
  • Directs scheduling and planning of maintenance activities using computer-based systems.
  • Develops and adjusts work-unit budgets and prepares estimates for unique maintenance and special projects.
  • Prepares oral and written reports on activity, operations, and expenditures.
  • Inspects and certifies the work of others, if certified or authorized.
  • Assists in the development of Requests for Bids, contract provisions, and bid proposal evaluations.
  • Coordinates work-unit activities with other teams, agencies, or contractors to optimize resource use and minimize disruptions.
  • Monitors contractor performance and manages procurement-related activities.
  • Ensures proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Supervises and provides training on safety, skills, and techniques to assigned work-unit staff.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and county policies and procedures in all relevant areas.
  • Directs maintenance, repairs, and pest control for turf grasses, trees, and ornamental shrubs, including safety and public coordination.
