About The Position

We are looking for a skilled Class 1 driver to support Victoria’s Solid Waste and Recycling operations. This is an auxiliary role focused on operational coverage, with a regular emphasis on weekend shifts and additional hours to provide relief during absences and peak periods. In this role, you’ll operate a tractor-trailer unit to transport materials between the transfer station and landfill, ensuring loads are handled safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations. You’ll also support the day-to-day operations of the transfer station, helping coordinate vehicle flow, guide operators, and ensure materials are managed according to City bylaws and environmental standards. As a trusted operator on site, you’ll work closely with staff and the public—providing direction, answering questions, and contributing to a safe, well-organized environment. From completing inspections and logs to supporting equipment upkeep and site cleanliness, your attention to detail will help keep operations running smoothly. Requirements

  • Grade 10.
  • Current and valid Class 1 B.C. Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement.
  • 4 years of equipment operation experience including tractor-trailer experience.
  • or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of Capital Regional District and Provincial Waste Management regulations and bylaws.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a tractor-trailer unit to transfer refuse to landfill from transfer station; level refuse load using a pike pole or backhoe; ensure load does not exceed legal limits; clean and wash interior and exterior of several tractors and trailers and perform minor maintenance.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to Provincial Regulations; report repairs needed and damage to mechanic shop and advise supervisor; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment log and time sheets.
  • Oversee the operations of the transfer station; assist and direct packer and service truck drivers in emptying loads into trailers; ensure materials comply with bylaws and regulations; advise staff in the safe disposal of all materials and alternate dumping locations; refer hazardous material to supervisor.
  • Pick up refuse, sweep and hose down transfer station dumping lanes and trailer bay; estimate and collect dumping fees and issue cash register receipts; balance cash to register receipt; operate truck weigh scale as required; operate refuse packer for waste collection as required.
  • Assist the public in disposing of waste and provide information regarding hours of operation and transfer station procedures; remove, repair and replace damaged tires and wheels on refuse toters; arrange with welding section for repair of other toter damage such as broken handles.
  • Perform related duties where qualified.
