Requirements

  • Possess a valid driver’s license which will be subject to annual DMV background checks.
  • 1 year maintenance experience in racing surfaces or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must qualify for licensing by the West Virginia Racing Commission.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for the state in which you reside.
  • Subject to periodic checks of your driving record.
  • Must have OSHA certification on machinery used by Track Maintenance.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all equipment and accessories within the track maintenance department, including large tractors, skid loaders, large front-end loaders, loaders, large trucks, zero-turn mowers, trimmers, saws, etc.
  • Release brakes, shift gears, and depress accelerator or move throttle to control forward and backward movement of tractor.
  • Steer tractor by turning steering wheel and depressing brake pedals.
  • Assist in maintaining the integrity of the race surface during training and racing.
  • Load and deliver clay and sand materials to racetrack and barn areas.
  • Assist in overall maintenance of grounds.
  • Maintain lawn and/or grass using zero-turn mowers, edgers, and trimmers.
  • Drive water truck to moisten the race surface.
  • Clean all equipment being used.
  • Report problems with machinery to the motor pool.
  • Set the starting gate during live racing.
  • Assist laborers when needed.
  • Assist with transportation of disabled horses.
  • Manually move/rake material around the race surface.
  • Assist in all snow removal over the entire property, including snow plowing, snow shoveling, sidewalk maintenance, and race track clean up.
