About The Position

ICF is seeking an On-Call Toxicologist to join its Health Science Practice. This group of over 100 science professionals provides comprehensive support in toxicology, hazard assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, and environmental modeling. The team specializes in identifying, quantifying, and documenting the health and environmental effects of various pollutants, including chemicals and microbes like metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds. The On-Call Toxicologist will primarily support federal agencies (e.g., U.S. EPA, NIEHS), state agencies, and private sector clients by developing reports that assess the human health impacts of pollutants. Key activities include qualitative literature reviews, support for scientific meetings, and project management. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative products and services, work on multiple projects with staff at all levels, apply academic knowledge, gain exposure to major projects, and develop content knowledge and consulting skills.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Toxicology, Epidemiology, Public Health, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related subject, or Bachelor’s degree in any of these fields combined with equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience.
  • The ability to interact with and present project updates to clients and develop quality professional relationships.
  • Strong data-science skills including experience managing and visualizing large datasets
  • Exceptional research and scientific writing skills, including editing, using reference management software (e.g. EndNote), and proofreading skills.
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, and visualization skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including experience with developing and delivering presentations.
  • The ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work in groups, individually, and virtually under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with environmental science systematic reviews is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Work on a diverse team that specializes in identifying and quantifying the effects of environmental pollutants on human health and the environment.
  • Review scientific and peer-reviewed literature to research a broad variety of scientific topics in environmental risk assessment, synthesize findings, and communicate them through various formats and media (e.g., written reports, online websites, visualizations).
  • Use a variety of data management and visualization tools to maintain rigorous databases and create engaging end-product visualizations and dashboards.
  • Conduct study data extraction using electronic systematic review procedures and tools.
  • Conduct data and statistical analysis involving Excel, Access, R, SAS, Python, SQL, VBA, and/or other software.
  • Participate in and support scientific workshop activities including notetaking, developing workshop summary reports, and other event logistics.
  • Follow and implement standardized QA/QC procedures on documents and reports.
  • Perform Toxicology systematic review tasks, including literature screening, study quality evaluation, and study data extraction.
  • Support risk assessment report development, including writing methods, results, and discussion sections, reviewing conclusions based on the data, and synthesizing findings into a weight of evidence analysis.
  • Conduct dose-response analyses when needed.
  • Interact with and present project updates to clients and develop quality professional relationships.
