Under general supervision, enforce City Municipal code of abandoned or junked vehicles and perform towing duties that include the removal and impounding of vehicles, the transfer of vehicles for investigation purposes or disposal. This role involves operating a tow truck to remove vehicles for impounding, transfer vehicles for investigation purposes, or disposal. It also includes assisting other divisions within the El Paso Police Department with vehicle removal or transfers for department use. The operator will patrol assigned locations within the City of El Paso limits, looking for violations of the municipal ordinance code for abandoned and/or junked vehicles, and issuing Five (5) -Day Tag notices to non-compliant vehicles. Additionally, the position requires impounding vehicles not in compliance with City ordinances for safekeeping, transferring vehicles for investigative purposes, handling vehicles considered evidence which may contain biohazards or dangerous chemicals, and transferring inoperable vehicles to designated garages for service. Responsibilities also include preparing vehicles for auction, removing license plates and stickers, inspecting vehicles for valuables or contraband, and maintaining a daily work log with necessary reports and paperwork to account for vehicles and work performed. The role also involves performing duties of coworkers as necessary to ensure continuity of operations, cross-training in other duties within the Abandoned Auto Unit, and assisting with training new employees.
