About The Position

The Virginia State Golf Association is seeking a USGA P.J. Boatwright Tournament Intern for the upcoming golf season. The internship lasts three months, from May through August, with flexible start and end dates based on the school schedule. The intern will be based at the VSGA office in Midlothian, Virginia, and will travel extensively throughout the state to assist with competitions and qualifying events. The role provides exposure to golf administration and supports the delivery of golf events, programs, and services to the golf community.

The USGA P.J. Boatwright Jr. Internship Program was established in 1991 to give short-term, entry-level experience to people interested in pursuing careers in golf administration while assisting state and regional golf associations in promoting amateur golf.

Requirements

• College degree completed or in process.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Interest in golf.
• Willingness to travel within Virginia.
• Organization of tasks and exceptional time management skills.
• Strong work ethic and verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to lift 40 pounds, stand and walk for extended periods, and work outside in extreme weather and temperatures.

Responsibilities

• Assist with competition operations, including registration, starting, scoring, course setup, monitoring pace of play, and communicating with tournament staff.
• Assist with course marking, determining hole locations, and taking hole-by-hole notes.
• Maintain the tournament entry database.
• Learn Golf Genius tournament management software to create events, pairings, and tee sheets, and enter scores.
• Track and update player of the year points.
• Assist with volunteer management.
• Respond to emails and phone calls about general tournament- or qualifier-related inquiries.
