About The Position

This is a part-time position located at the Capitol Park Museum in Baton Rouge, LA. This position's responsibilities include providing basic safety and interpretive services in the galleries and throughout the museum. The incumbent may also serve as initial point of contact for all visitors and groups to the Louisiana State Museum. The incumbent will need to maintain working knowledge of and fluency for all LSM programs and exhibits; be able to adapt to changes in schedule and job requirements; assist the programming and education staff to implement educational programs, school tours, and special events as efficiently as possible. The Louisiana State Museum’s collections and educational programs stimulate awareness and appreciation of our state’s rich and diverse history and culture. From Louis Armstrong to Huey P. Long, from Mardi Gras to fais-do-do, and from the nation-building commerce of the Mississippi River to the life-sustaining bounty of the Gulf of Mexico, the Capitol Park Museum provides a panoramic exploration of the most vibrant state in America. With thematic exhibits on diverse aspects of Louisiana history, industry, and culture, the museum includes two permanent exhibits: Grounds for Greatness: Louisiana and the Nation and The Louisiana Experience: Discovering the Soul of America. Requirements

  • No training or experience required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor galleries internally to assure safety of museum artifacts, buildings, and guests.
  • Monitor and alert designated museum administrator in the event of crisis or disturbance.
  • Monitor and maintain the flow of visitors.
  • Ensure all museum rules are followed.
  • Assist visitors with questions.
  • Provides information to LSM guests on LSM programming, properties, and other regional attractions.
  • Distributes brochures, maps, and other LSM printed material.
  • Answer visitors’ questions pertaining to museum exhibits, the state, history, and culture.
  • Refers museum guests interested in additional LSM information to the appropriate museum personnel.
  • Use computer-based Point of Sale ticketing system and group reservation database.
  • Receive cash, checks, and other forms of payment for museum admission.
  • Explain museum discount programs.
  • Verifies total sales and balance the cash drawer at the end of the day.
  • Documents and explains and overages or shortages.
  • Maintain working knowledge to operate various office machines, such as copiers, calculators, and credit card machines.
  • Upon completion of proper training, may assist curatorial staff with cleaning of exhibits and artifacts on display.
  • May assist with museum programming, tours, and events in visitor services or building monitor capacity.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Must demonstrate and utilize advanced computer skills and knowledge of a wide range of general and proprietary software, Office suite, Outlook, usage of a variety of online forms and internet portals.
  • Must demonstrate and exemplify responsible use of the Internet.
  • Responsible and accountable for use and maintenance of state property as assigned.
