About The Position

The Sensing Product Design team is seeking a mechanical engineer to develop sensing technology and integrate it into Apple products. The role owns the end-to-end design, development, and validation of sensing technology, working with a multifunctional team to generate design concepts and provide mechanical engineering analysis and documentation. The engineer evaluates design tradeoffs and risks, uses experiments to reduce design risk, performs tolerance studies, and drives processes that meet Apple’s cosmetic standards. During prototyping and validation, the engineer supports external manufacturing vendors with process development and root-cause analysis of issues identified during testing. The role includes international travel of 10% to 20%. Responsibilities also include mechanical design and documentation, electrical component and module integration, building and testing prototypes, analyzing data, and collaborating with cross-functional partners, vendors, and manufacturing teams to meet integration, performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cosmetic requirements throughout product lifecycles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; the posting specifies a minimum requirement of a bachelor’s degree and a BS with at least 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • At least 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, including material properties, solid mechanics, beam statics, Newtonian physics, and thermodynamics.
  • Experience with 3D CAD.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create clear engineering documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse team members and external vendors to achieve project goals.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with high-volume mass production or consumer electronics.
  • Siemens NX CAD fluency.
  • High-volume or mass-production development experience.
  • FEA modeling experience with any major CAD software system.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printers, CNC mills, lathes, or other hand-fabrication methods.
  • Experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, statistical analysis, and design of experiments.
  • Experience in consumer electronics or sensing.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end design, development, and validation of sensing technology for Apple products.
  • Generate design concepts with a multifunctional team and provide mechanical engineering analysis and documentation.
  • Identify design tradeoffs and risks to choose viable paths forward.
  • Apply experiment design and the scientific method to reduce design risk early.
  • Run tolerance studies and analyses to assess feasibility and predict performance of mechanisms, sensors, and cosmetic features across manufacturing tolerances.
  • Drive processes to meet cosmetic standards.
  • Develop mechanical designs in 3D and 2D, and create specifications, detailed designs, and 2D documentation for parts and assemblies.
  • Integrate electrical components and modules.
  • Build proof-of-concept models and prototypes; conduct testing and analysis.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to understand and execute critical integration, performance, and reliability requirements.
  • Partner with external vendors and internal manufacturing teams to optimize designs for function, manufacturability, and cosmetics.
  • Ensure designs meet requirements throughout their lifecycles by performing stress, tolerance, and failure analyses.
  • Analyze data generated from builds and design of experiments.
  • Support external manufacturing vendors with process development and root-cause analysis during prototyping and validation.
  • Travel internationally to support vendors, approximately 10% to 20% of the time.
