Toolmaker
About The Position
Performs assignments ranging from the use of ordinary tool room operations to work involving accurate relationships and extremely close tolerances. Plans construction procedures and methods; including but not limited to; selecting the proper materials, compute dimensions and plan layout, machining, and assembly operations. Identifies and corrects problems in complicated dies and tools. Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances using measuring and inspection devices such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, micrometers and eye loupes. Sets-up and operates machine tools such as lathe, vertical milling machine, surface and jig grinders, as well as some specialty grinders, to machine parts and tooling to tolerances of within .0002 and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications. Heat treats various tool steels to the required hardness specification. Examines standard or previously used tools or dies and uses proper judgment in evaluating the need for modifications or replacements to be made. Calculates all punch and die clearances as well as all tooling dimensions. Maintains good housekeeping standards. All other duties as assigned by manager.

- Ability to use measuring and inspection devices such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, micrometers and eye loupes
- Ability to set-up and operate machine tools such as lathe, vertical milling machine, surface and jig grinders, as well as some specialty grinders
- Ability to machine parts and tooling to tolerances of within .0002
- Ability to heat treat various tool steels to the required hardness specification
- Ability to examine standard or previously used tools or dies and use proper judgment in evaluating the need for modifications or replacements to be made
- Ability to calculate all punch and die clearances as well as all tooling dimensions
