About The Position

Steel Tool & Engineering Co. is seeking a full-time Toolmaker in Trenton, MI, who prioritizes precision, efficiency, and high-quality craftsmanship. This role involves building, repairing, and maintaining precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and specialized manufacturing equipment. The ideal candidate will work independently, demonstrating precision, efficiency, and troubleshooting skills while maintaining accurate records. Responsibilities include setting up CNC and manual machining equipment, producing, assembling, and finishing tools, inspecting finished products using precision measurement devices, diagnosing and repairing tools, and contributing to process improvements through root-cause analysis and supporting tooling enhancements.

Requirements

  • Experience working with CAD drawings
  • Experience using precision measurement tools
  • Strong proficiency in CNC and manual machining
  • Mechanical aptitude with an understanding of mechanical relationships, tolerances, and fits
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • High levels of accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail
  • Ability to clearly communicate with engineers, machinists, and production teams
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., perform repetitive tasks with few breaks, and follow all safety protocols
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening test

Nice To Haves

  • CAM programming experience
  • Completion of a tool and die apprenticeship, a journeyman certification, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience in a tool room or precision machining environment

Responsibilities

  • Accurately building, repairing, and maintaining precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and specialized manufacturing equipment.
  • Reading and following blueprints, engineering drawings, CAD models, and machining specifications to produce highly precise parts that meet tight tolerances.
  • Properly setting up CNC and manual machining equipment (lathes, grinders, hand tools, etc.).
  • Accurately producing, assembling, and finishing tools.
  • Inspecting finished products with precision measurement devices (micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc.) to ensure quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Diagnosing issues with tools and performing correct repairs to get them production-ready.
  • Determining the most efficient machining sequences.
  • Performing root-cause analysis on issues.
  • Supporting improved tooling and manufacturing processes.
  • Maintaining accurate records and set-up sheets.
