About The Position

The Tool Room Technician supports the build, modification, repair, and maintenance of precision tools, dies, fixtures, and gauges used in the manufacturing process. This role assists with machining, fabrication, die tryout, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and continuous improvement activities within the Tool Room. The position may be filled at an entry-level or more experienced level depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications. Candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and a willingness to develop technical skills may be considered, while candidates with prior tool room, machining, die maintenance, or tool and die experience may be considered for a higher-level placement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in a tool room, machining, maintenance, manufacturing, die repair, or tool and die environment is preferred.
  • Entry-level candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and an interest in precision manufacturing may be considered.
  • More experienced candidates may be considered for a higher-level placement based on demonstrated skills and business need.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in precision manufacturing.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, process layouts, strip layouts, and engineering change notices, or the ability to develop these skills.
  • Basic math skills including fractions, decimals, and geometry.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments.
  • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work safely.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn from experienced Tool Room personnel and continue developing technical skills.
  • Ability to stand and move for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity for precision handwork.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, oils, metal chips, and environmental heat during summer months.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in machining, manufacturing, math, blueprint reading, CAD, or a related technical field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with or perform the layout, machining, fitting, and assembly of tools, fixtures, gauges, and dies.
  • Operate and maintain precision tool room equipment based on skill level and experience.
  • Perform bench work including hand fitting, spotting, stoning, polishing, and deburring of die components.
  • Read and interpret technical documentation including blueprints, GD&T, CAD models, process sheets, strip layouts, and engineering change notices.
  • Use safe work practices and follow proper procedures when operating tools and equipment.
  • Support die tryouts in stamping presses.
  • Assist with diagnosing and correcting issues related to part quality, timing, shut height, and tool wear.
  • Assist with press adjustments, die setting, sensor installation, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with experienced Tool Room personnel, Engineering, Maintenance, and Production teams to resolve tooling and production concerns.
  • Help identify root causes of tooling failures and production issues.
  • Use precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators, and other inspection tools.
  • Inspect die components and stamped parts for dimensional accuracy, form, and finish.
  • Accurately document work performed, repairs made, and tooling changes.
  • Follow quality standards and support compliance with company procedures and customer requirements.
  • Assist with or perform preventive maintenance activities to extend die life and improve reliability.
  • Support die repair, modification, and improvement initiatives focused on uptime, part quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas in accordance with 5S or similar standards.
  • Follow all safety, environmental, and quality system requirements, including OSHA, ISO, and company policies.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, teamwork, and a willingness to continue developing technical skills.
