About The Position

The Tooling Technician provides hands-on mold service, preventive maintenance, tooling preparation and problem solving. The Tooling Technician tracks data on tooling and fixtures, assists in the assembly of new tools and machines, and performs other day-to-day duties in a manufacturing environment. The Tooling Technician is part of the maintenance team and is expected to assist the team when called upon. The Tooling Technician is expected to be 90% hands-on service and 10% planning.

Requirements

  • Two years’ experience performing service, repair, and preventative maintenance on molds and tooling in a plastic processing environment is preferred.
  • Millwright qualifications preferred
  • Ability to understand materials and processes, problem sources and the correction required.
  • Mechanical aptitude and experience, with the ability to use manual and power tools, and to use and interpret mechanical measuring instruments.
  • Ability to learn about and remember key information about parts molded in the department.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, preferably with spreadsheets, word processing software, CMMS systems, social media platforms, and other applicable software programs.
  • Good communication skills (able to understand written and verbal instructions in English).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct all work in a safe manner and wear prescribed PPE when performing all jobs.
  • Be aware of the hazards associated with each task and report any other potential hazard, unsafe practices or working conditions.
  • Perform tooling inspections and tool maintenance using work orders to track performance.
  • Perform tool changeovers, inspect auxiliary equipment for function ability and troubleshoot tooling related process issues.
  • Always look for ways to improve the efficiency of changeovers and tool maintenance.
  • Ensure valid set up of tooling in machines and auxiliary equipment using related forms in Poka.
  • Ensure that work is performed on tooling using correct materials, safety checks are performed, and that organization and cleanliness is maintained.
  • Troubleshoot throughout the process to ensure optimum tool utilization and performance.
  • Perform safety checks, in-machine tool maintenance, repairs, lubrication, alignment and other various maintenance tasks.
  • Change inserts, cores, knives and associated parts as required.
  • Recommend improvements to the tooling and auxiliary equipment.
  • Ensure safe and proper operation and care for tooling.
  • Ensure that required documents are filled out correctly on forms, CMMS System and Poka.
  • Stop production if there is risk to personnel safety or potential damage to the equipment and/or tool and process.
  • Involvement in the testing and evaluation of repaired tools and new tools.
  • Perform repairs and calibration on print heads, mandrels and any other equipment deemed to be “tooling” such as lid pallets, robot baskets, etc.
