About The Position

Ontic is a leading global aerospace OEM trusted by the world’s aviation leaders. Ontic’s Chatsworth, CA, site specializes in precision engineering, MRO, and new solutions for parts at risk of obsolescence. With over 1,400 employees across four time zones and seven sites, we have more than doubled in size since 2019 and are continuing to grow at pace. Our team is looking for a Tool Maker to join our team at Ontic, Chatsworth Office in California- The Tool Maker designs, repairs and fabricates all types of complex tools/tool fixtures and dies, using machines (lathes/mills/etc.). Must possess the experience to do difficult machining operations such as: precision boring, grinding, millings, lathe work (i.e. threading/boring/turning). Works from extremely complicated blueprints, drawings, sketches and or oral directions to create and produce intricate dies, tools, fixtures, jigs, models and parts. As required, they must have the ability to fabricate intricate development tooling/test stands as required. Can consistently do extremely close accuracy and tolerances of .00005” or less when required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 7–12+ years of experience in precision machining/toolmaking, preferably in aerospace or high-spec manufacturing
  • Must possess the experience to do difficult machining operations such as: precision boring, grinding, millings, lathe work (i.e. threading/boring/turning)
  • Works from extremely complicated blueprints, drawings, sketches and or oral directions to create and produce intricate dies, tools, fixtures, jigs, models and parts
  • Ability to fabricate intricate development tooling/test stands as required
  • Can consistently do extremely close accuracy and tolerances of .00005” or less when required
  • Must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person ” as defined by 22. C.F.R. §120.15 is required. “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical school, apprenticeship, or journeyman certification in toolmaking or machining strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Designing, building, repairing, and maintaining jigs, fixtures, gauges, and tooling
  • Expert in manual machining (Bridgeport mills, lathes, surface grinders)
  • Strong capability in tight-tolerance machining (±0.0005" or better)
  • Reading engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications
  • Strong understanding of geometric tolerancing and datum structures
  • Proficient with precision inspection tools: Micrometers, calipers, height gauges
  • Optical Comparators, bore gauges
  • Surface plates and indicators
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for tool wear, dimensional variation, and process issues
  • Ability to recommend design-for-manufacturability (DFM) improvements
  • Understanding of production flow and tooling impact on cycle time and quality
  • Familiarity with traceability, documentation, and revision control
