About The Position

The die polisher supports the Forge department with the maintenance and repair of all tooling/dies for the Manual and Automatic Upsetter machines. This role is responsible for assembling, reconditioning, benching, changing, and cleaning up tooling for use in manual and automatic upsetters. The position requires documenting process measurements, using measuring instruments to ensure conformance to specifications, and resurfacing/cleaning dies using hand tools and powered equipment. The die polisher will also inspect dies for defects, measure openings, analyze defective parts to determine causes and recommend solutions, and decipher blueprints. Maintaining a clean work area and adhering to all safety regulations are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • One to three months related experience and/or training preferred
  • Ability to read and write simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively report relevant data and job specific information as needed
  • Ability to perform intermediate mathematics.
  • Ability to convert fractions to decimals
  • Ability to navigate basic technology including but not limited to the use of digital self-service platforms, time clocks and other systems where applicable.
  • Satisfactory completion of Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test.
  • Demonstrated ability using measurement devices such as micrometers, calipers, etc.
  • Possess a good mechanical aptitude.
  • Previous experience with crane operation.
  • Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts
  • Use carts, dollies, cranes and jacks to transport material when needed
  • Must be able to regularly lift and or move up to 55 lbs.
  • Tolerate potentially extreme temperature fluctuations impacted by weather and machinery
  • Acclimate to high noise and vibration levels in work spaces
  • Wear and adhere to all PPE guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards.
  • Comfortable working in confined work environments

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all aspects of assembling, reconditioning, benching, changing, and cleaning up the tooling for use in the manual and automatic upsetters.
  • Document process measurements using the required forms.
  • Must be proficient using measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and other gages to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Resurface and clean dies/tooling using hand tools: powered drill, grinder, and files, and any other hand tools.
  • Inspects dies for cracks and smoothness of finish as well as conformance to specs.
  • Measures diameter of die openings for conformance to specifications, using steel gauge pins and micrometer
  • Inspects worn dies to determine their extent of wear to determine salvageability of die/tooling
  • Analyzes defective parts to determine cause of defect and recommends changes or modifications.
  • Deciphers blueprints of parts, machines and/or dies
  • Maintains a clean work area, machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Follows all safety and plant rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
