About The Position

The Tool & Die Maker will repair, assemble, and/or rebuild die cast components/tooling to meet or exceed functional run capability and safety requirements, and produce castings that meet customer specifications and delivery commitments.

Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 12
  • Certification of Qualification as a Tool & Die Maker/Toolmaker/Mould Maker
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience as a Toolmaker or Mould Maker
  • Advanced level/complex blueprint reading and interpretation to conceptualize/visualize complex machining operations/procedures to manufacture the work piece to extremely tight (+/- .0002, .005 mm) tolerances and specifications
  • Advanced level ability to measure precisely in either imperial or metric measurement using measuring tools and complete conversions from one to the other
  • Advanced level skill and knowledge of the die casting process, dies, fixtures and cutting tools
  • Advanced level skill and knowledge in the safe operation of all standard tool room equipment
  • Proficiency in geometry and trigonometry

Nice To Haves

  • Tool steel welding skills, preferred
  • Ability to silver solder various sub assemblies of die parts preferred
  • Ability to weld minute cavity detail using plasma needle arc welder with minimum amount of distortions or overflow preferred
  • Intermediate level working knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical controls and PLC's preferred

Responsibilities

  • Complete high-level complexity set-ups and toolmaking activities, and coordinate required manufacturing/processing activities to build, repair, assemble, and/or rebuild tooling to specifications within identified timelines, to meet production and customer needs.
  • Review product/assembly/blueprint/drawings, determine, plan, and coordinate tooling movement through required sequence(s) of operations, and complete complex set-up and machining operations required to produce work piece to prescribed tolerances, dimensions, and finish.
  • Conduct required inspection and measurement activities to verify conformance of machined parts to specifications, hand and machine fit die parts to precise dimensions, and disposition component/tooling for heat treat, when required.
  • Expedite heat treated components through required machining and cavity center operations to fit the die/tool, verify cavity conformance to customer print and cavity layout.
  • Update blueprints and communicate with Designers/support staff regarding required design modifications.
  • Assemble and fit/adjust die/tooling to extremely tight drawing specifications/tolerances, prepare for first testing, and complete required documentation.
  • Provide technical assistance/guidance as required throughout the initial testing and inspection of castings, and provide required input/assistance to troubleshoot and coordinate implementation of corrective actions.
  • Monitor action outcomes, document completed rework, update prints and complete revision requests, and where required, record labour hours and prepare tooling to ship to production plants.
  • Analyze tooling problems and inspection reports, and communicate any input regarding corrective actions with the appropriate individuals/departments.
  • Troubleshoot customer casting-related issues to determine appropriate corrective actions, and monitor impact of actions implemented to resolve issue.
  • Detect and highlight design improvement opportunities, and modify engineering documents as required to improve clarity and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Perform routine operations and Preventative Maintenance (P.M.) functions to support efficient machine and department operations.
  • Maintain production tools.
  • Maintain adequate spare parts and initiate required documentation to requisition parts as needed.
  • Provide guidance/support to junior peers, apprentices, and other personnel as needed.
  • Conduct all scheduled P.M. activities, record and maintain completed activities records, and initiate machine/tooling/technology continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Attend communication, Engineering and/or other meetings as required.
  • Complete required housekeeping activities to maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Weld cavity area as required, and participate in manufacturing of new tooling when required.
  • Repair or maintain all tooling on machining line plus, equipment and casting machine and robots.
  • Build experimental cutters and tooling.
  • Check and repair all gauging as needed.
  • Assist in equipment maintenance in areas of his/her work where tool making expertise is necessary.
  • Make gauges for inspection department, and electrodes, where applicable.
  • Build new cavities, plates and related parts for die maintenance, jigs and fixtures to accommodate machining lines, and fixtures for robots.
  • Set-up and run experimental runs.
