About The Position

Tool and Die Maker analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machines. This role involves processing methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. The individual will plan the sequence of operations, fabrication, assembly, and layout of all types of tools and dies from drawings, written, and verbal instructions. They will set up and operate Tool and Die-making equipment and grinders, working to tolerances as close as .0001 inch. Responsibilities include studying blueprints, visualizing and computing dimensions, lifting and positioning parts, loading and unloading machines, inspecting finished dies and molds, marking parts, conducting test runs, and examining, repairing, and maintaining dies, tools, and jigs. The role also involves filing, grinding, shimmying, and adjusting parts for proper fit, smoothing and polishing surfaces, verifying dimensions with measuring instruments, identifying and troubleshooting tooling operations, and potentially representing the factory on cross-functional teams. Additionally, the role requires assisting and training less qualified operators, reporting safety violations and equipment issues, keeping the work area clean, and demonstrating technical knowledge in blueprint reading and precision instruments. The position relies on instructions, pre-established guidelines, experience, and judgment to perform job functions within a specific field, working under limited supervision with creativity and latitude. Employees are responsible for complying with all Federal, Local, and State government rules and regulations, LISI Aerospace, and HSE Procedures, including ISO 14001 standards. They must attend all training, adhere to HSE procedures, report nonconformance, and seek opportunities to improve HSE performance. Waste elimination initiatives are also encouraged. For the processing factory, the role includes identifying heat treat for tools, fixtures, and dies, and performing other related tasks.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Working experience in fitting manufacturing environment.
  • Advance knowledge of tool and die procedures.
  • Working knowledge with quality.
  • A minimum of 3 years equivalent combination of technical education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, use precision inspection instruments, and set up and operate all tool room machinery.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and basic technical procedures.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts and calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios and standard units of measurements).
  • Knowledge of simple geometry is preferred.
  • Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts and follow instructions in written and basic diagram formats.
  • Ability to perform and apply different problem solving techniques, handle internal/external situations and multi-task functions.
  • Basic knowledge of mainframe computer systems, and be familiar with Spreadsheet and Word Processing software.
  • Evidence of “US person” is required under ITAR.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand for extended periods of time and walk; requires eye-hand coordination, use hands hand movement and manual dexterity use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, listen and speak.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up bend, reach to shoulder level and lift, carrying, pushing and/or pulling to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point), and ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).

Responsibilities

  • Plans the sequence of operations, fabrication assembly and layout of all types of tools and dies from tool drawings, written and verbal instructions.

  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
  • Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
  • Load and unload items from production machines manually or by using hand tools.
  • Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Inspects finished molds and pads to ensure dimensions, finish, clearances, angles and contours conform to blueprint or other specifications.
  • Mark or tag identification on parts.
  • Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary.
  • Examines repairs and maintains standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
  • File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Able to identify, perform and troubleshoot tooling operations in manufacturing for improved quality and tooling life.
  • May represent Factory/Department manufacturing on cross-functional teams, safety committees or other in-house committees.
  • Able to assist and train less qualified machine operators as needed in use of equipment, methods, and documentation.
  • Reports any safety violation, machining equipment misusage and/or improperly performed work to supervisor.
  • Report any malfunctioning equipment to leads or immediate supervisors.
  • Keeps work area and equipment clean.
  • Identifies Heat Treat for tools, fixtures, and dies, etc.
  • Performs a variety of other tasks and duties.
  • Participate in the development and promotion of the HSE culture.
