About The Position

The 3rd year Apprentice Tool & Die Maker will work closely with the Toolroom Supervisor and the production team to support on-going production requirements at Omex Manufacturing ULC. The successful apprentice will expand their knowledge to run machinery and equipment in the tool room and observe and/or assist the tool and die makers in troubleshooting, sharpening, maintenance, and modifying dies.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a Tool & Die Program and working towards Tool & Die Maker Certificate (430A)
  • 3rd years’ apprentice as a Tool and Die Maker in an industrial setting.
  • Proficiency in reading technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Expertise in precision machining, grinding, milling, and EDM techniques
  • Available for shift work and overtime as required.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and sound decision making.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbal and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and team work.

  • Welding and fabrication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Stamping die maintenance including, but not limited to sharpening, polishing, welding, replacing broken and worn parts and components.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues both mechanical and electrical (die protection sensors) to ensure consistent production and part quality.
  • Contribute to and maintain an up-to-date electronic tooling log consisting of troubleshooting notes, corrective actions made, MRO inventory consumed, etc.
  • Read and interpret drawings and specifications of fixtures, tools, dies, and stamping tooling.
  • Assemble tooling and die components, ensuring proper alignment and fit.
  • Verify dimensional accuracy and adjust components as needed.
  • Utilize precision machinery and equipment to fabricate tooling and die components.
  • Employ machining, milling, grinding, and EDM processes to achieve precise tolerances.
  • Conduct rigorous inspections to ensure that tooling and dies meet or exceed quality standards.
  • Provide input for equipment or tooling modifications.
  • Operate cranes to safely move, split and close stamping dies.
  • Operate a variety of machine tools to cut, turn, mill, plane, bore, grind and shape the piece being worked on to specific requirements.
  • Participate in and provide on the job training with other maintenance and tooling team members including apprentices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics to design tooling and dies.
  • Collaborate with engineers to optimize designs for functionality and manufacturability.
  • Perform regular maintenance and repairs on existing tooling and dies to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues to implement timely solutions.
  • Verify proper functionality, fit, and precision of components.
  • Work closely with engineering and production teams to understand requirements and provide expertise.
  • Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance tooling performance.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of tool and die specifications, changes, and repairs.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), as required.
  • Work independently and take initiative.
  • Work in a professional and cooperative manner and communicate effectively.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OSHA).
  • Follow all Omex Manufacturing ULC company policies.
  • Willingness to take additional training courses, as required.
  • Achieve performance requirements in a responsible and economical manner.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the Omex Manufacturing ULC Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain a tidy and organized area.
