About The Position

As a Tool and Die Machinist, you set up and operate a variety of manual and CNC machine tools—including lathes, milling machines, EDM, shapers, and grinders—to machine metal workpieces such as patterns and machine-tool or die parts according to specifications, tooling instructions, and standard charts. The role involves interpreting specifications and blueprints, planning machining operations, securing and positioning workpieces, setting machine controls and feeds, and checking finished work for conformance to requirements. You perform routine preventive maintenance as scheduled and required for TPM; contribute individually and as part of a team to quality and efficiency improvements; and may cross-train and demonstrate competency at different departmental workstations as production needs require. The role also includes training and teaching others, maintaining a clean and orderly work area, and supporting company, department, and safety policies and programs.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, proportions, and decimals.
  • Ability to understand and use measuring devices to meet drawing dimensions and specifications.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, work instructions, diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Continual attention to detail, follow-through, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines.

  • Analyze specifications and determine tooling, applying knowledge of metal properties, machining, and shop mathematics.
  • Study blueprints or workpiece layouts to visualize required machining and plan the sequence of operations.
  • Read blueprints or job orders for dimensions, tolerances, fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, and depth of cut, and determine the sequence of operations.
  • Lift, position, and secure workpieces manually or with a hoist, using machine tables, chucks, centers, fixtures, clamps, wrenches, and other aids as needed.
  • Position machine tools and workpieces relative to one another and set specified feeds, speeds, and depth of cut.
  • Set up fixtures or feeding devices, start machines, feed tools or workpieces, and engage the feed.
  • Observe machine operation and verify workpiece conformance using measuring instruments such as fixed gauges, calipers, micrometers, and CMM.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on machines as scheduled and required for TPM.
  • Work individually and as part of a team to develop and implement quality and efficiency improvements.
  • Conduct tests and inspections of products or processes and examine work to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Cross-train and demonstrate competency across essential departmental job functions and workstations as production needs require.
