About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Thrift Store Clerk to provide customer service, sort incoming product, and assist in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Hanover Thrift Store. This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week, with a schedule that may vary weekly and include weekdays and Saturdays. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The role involves protecting the integrity of donated items, processing raw materials, interacting positively with customers and donors, contributing to sales targets, and maintaining store appearance and security.

Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 9.
  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience.
  • Cash handling experience is required.
  • Basic math skills required.
  • Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required.
  • Ability to lift/move 40 pounds.
  • Mandatory requirement for steel-toe safety boots or shoes.
  • Universal precautions; safety gloves.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period (Canada Summer Jobs Program eligibility).
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment (Canada Summer Jobs Program eligibility).
  • A valid Social Insurance Number (Canada Summer Jobs Program eligibility).
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations (Canada Summer Jobs Program eligibility).

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Protect the integrity of all donated items.
  • Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, storing, loading and baling donations.
  • Interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly and courteous manner.
  • Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact and courtesy when dealing with difficult donors/customers.
  • Possess knowledge of stock prices and featured sale products in order to respond to customer enquiries.
  • Assist donors with their donations, unload donations, and place stock in appropriate warehouse locations.
  • Select donations for store distribution meeting established standards of quality and distinguishing between discarded/recycled and good quality merchandise according to company standards; ensure that all products are priced correctly as per store policy.
  • Replenish inventory levels, i.e. hang clothing and restocking of merchandise as directed.
  • Pay attention to store security, by monitoring activity within the store.
  • Categorize and box seasonal clothing, housewares, shoes etc. for storing.
  • Abide by store policy and procedures.
  • Work with volunteers as assigned.
  • Inform your supervisor of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc.
  • Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, cleans spillage).
  • Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of customer transactions including handling cash and debit sales.
  • Contribute to store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
  • Assist with the materials management of donations/product flow in the thrift store.
