About The Position

Thrifty Tails Boutique is a nonprofit thrift boutique that offers quality second-hand and vintage items to benefit animals cared for by the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT). The store features a curated selection of gently used and vintage clothing, pet-related goods, household items, small home décor, artwork, and jewelry, alongside new, low-cost items. The Part-Time, Temporary Thrift Store Associate is responsible for various aspects of the retail store's operations, including overseeing volunteers, managing inventory, processing register transactions, and ensuring excellent customer service. This role contributes to a safe and healthy working and shopping environment for everyone.

Requirements

  • Minimum education includes a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year experience in retail sales.
  • Ability to use a cash register and teach others how to use one, including void transactions, discounts, and tax-exempt sales.
  • Excellent math/accounting skills and familiarity with working with cash receipts.
  • Computer literate, or other donor database software, web applications, social media, and knowledge about the role of technology and electronic payment systems.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations, animal welfare, and volunteerism.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills, capable of working effectively with customers, volunteers, staff, vendors, and the general public.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, professional, flexible, and adaptable with a sense of humor, able to multitask and work independently in a hands-on work environment.
  • A team player with an attitude of service and the ability to motivate others.
  • Highly motivated toward the welfare and humane treatment of all animals; understands the lifesaving importance of finding homes for shelter animals.

Nice To Haves

  • Thrift store experience is strongly preferred.
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license with a driving record acceptable by our insurance carrier and be bondable is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the HSTT Thrift Store in the absence of managers.
  • Balance workload between daily store duties and assisting customers on the sales floor.
  • Provide a pleasant and welcoming environment for all customers.
  • Support and oversee HSTT Thrift Store volunteers when management is not present.
  • Handle the proper accounting and banking of cash receipts at the end of the business day when the GM is not in, safeguarding cash at all times.
  • Enforce pricing policies (one price/no haggle) and recommended strategies for sales promotions to maximize sales.
  • Work with the GM to maintain a system for purging items from the store to ensure a constant flow of new inventory.
  • Create an attractive shopping environment by neatly stacking, shelving, and hanging clothing garments and other donated goods.
  • Ensure the store is always organized and clean, including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors, dusting shelves, cleaning bathrooms, and washing windows.
  • Resolve customer or volunteer issues (conflicts, complaints) when management is not on duty.
  • Ensure all thrift store operations comply with Federal, State, and local safety regulations and laws, and HSTT policies and procedures.
  • Report safety hazards, property damage, and personal injuries to the Thrift Store GM, Community Engagement Director, and CEO immediately.
  • Collaborate to resolve reported issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.
