About The Position

Thrifty Tails Boutique is a nonprofit thrift boutique operated by the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT). HSTT is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoptions, community spay/neuter services, and humane education programs. The store offers a curated selection of gently used and vintage clothing, pet-related goods, household goods, small home décor, artwork, and jewelry, alongside new, low-cost items. The Part-Time Thrift Store Associate plays a key role in the daily operations of the retail store, including managing volunteers, inventory, and register transactions, all while providing excellent customer service and ensuring a safe and healthy environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in retail sales.
  • Ability to use a cash register, including void transactions, discounts, and tax-exempt sales, and to teach others.
  • Excellent math/accounting skills and familiarity with working with cash receipts.
  • Computer literate, with experience in donor database software, web applications, and social media.
  • Knowledge about the role of technology and electronic payment systems.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations, animal welfare, and volunteerism.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with customers, volunteers, staff, vendors, and the public.
  • Energetic, self-motivated, professional, flexible, and adaptable.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently in a hands-on environment.
  • Team player with an attitude of service and the ability to motivate others.
  • Highly motivated toward the welfare and humane treatment of all animals.
  • Understanding of the lifesaving importance of finding homes for shelter animals.

Nice To Haves

  • Thrift store experience is strongly preferred.
  • Possession of a valid unrestricted driver's license with an acceptable driving record by the insurance carrier is preferred.
  • Bondability is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate cash registers and manage the receiving area, representing the HSTT brand with excellent customer service.
  • Oversee daily operations of the HSTT Thrift Store in the absence of managers, balancing store duties with customer assistance.
  • Support and oversee thrift store volunteers when management is not present.
  • Handle the accounting and banking of cash receipts at the end of the business day when the GM is not in, ensuring cash is safeguarded.
  • Enforce pricing policies (one price/no haggle) and implement sales promotion strategies to maximize sales.
  • Collaborate with the GM to maintain a system for purging items and ensuring a continuous flow of new inventory.
  • Create an attractive shopping environment by neatly stacking, shelving, and hanging merchandise.
  • Maintain store organization and cleanliness, including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, and washing windows.
  • Resolve customer and volunteer issues (conflicts, complaints) when management is not on duty.
  • Ensure all thrift store operations comply with Federal, State, and local safety regulations, laws, and HSTT policies, maintaining a safe environment for all.
  • Report safety hazards, property damage, and personal injuries immediately to the Thrift Store GM, Community Engagement Director, and CEO, and collaborate on resolutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
