About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Thrift Store Manager, this role helps plan, administer, monitor, and evaluate the day-to-day operations of a small Thrift Store with a limited staff. The position ensures compliance with established policies and procedures, processes, displays, and prices donated items to ensure a reasonable financial return on sales. The Assistant Manager assists customers in a polite and friendly manner, prepares attractive and orderly store displays, rotates and re-stocks merchandise for quick turnover, and ensures the accountability and security of all store items and funds. This role also monitors work and serves as a lead worker to volunteers, beneficiaries, and/or subordinate store personnel, and instructs community service workers with assigned duties and completing time sheets.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience working in a retail store environment
  • At least one year of experience in a supervisory capacity
  • Valid State Driver's License
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements

Responsibilities

  • Schedules donation pick-ups and ensures the accountability of all donated items, collected in compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assists customers with purchases by ringing up sales, collecting monies, counting change, preparing receipts, and packaging items. Prepares and balances the cash drawer, runs register print-outs, prepares and delivers bank deposits, and ensures the security and accountability of all cash register funds and sales records.
  • Assists customers by explaining store policy, responding to questions regarding pricing and purchasing, and ensuring a pleasant customer experience.
  • Assists customers donating items by directing them to the proper area, potentially assisting with hauling donations, and preparing and providing tax receipts.
  • Performs routine building maintenance, including minor plumbing and carpentry repairs, cleaning surroundings after repairs, and ensuring tools and surroundings are left neat and clean.
  • Maintains the neatness and orderliness of all tools, supplies, parts, and equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment for store and warehouse operations.
  • Recruits and supervises volunteers working in the Thrift Store and warehouse.
  • Greets and interviews clients requesting assistance to determine eligibility based on program guidelines, records client information, and assists clients in completing applications for assistance.
  • Prepares, completes, and processes food, clothing, and furniture vouchers for eligible clients.
  • Provides clients with food from the pantry, receives and stocks pantry donations, and maintains an itemized account of pantry disbursements and inventory.
  • Locates and arranges temporary housing for eligible clients by contacting local lodges, shelters, motels, and churches.
  • Processes rent and utility financial assistance for eligible clients.
  • Assists eligible clients needing transportation assistance based on medical or relocation needs.
  • Serves as a liaison to other agencies to obtain/coordinate assistance on behalf of clients.
  • Prepares and files client records in a timely manner, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Prepares and maintains statistical records on all services provided and compiles monthly statistical reports.
  • Administers and monitors the day-to-day operations of the Thrift Store.
  • Serves as lead worker to volunteers, beneficiaries, and/or subordinate store personnel, training and instructing them in proper methods and procedures.
  • Inspects work in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completeness.
  • Supervises and participates in the receiving, sorting, pricing, and distribution of donated items.
  • Plans, supervises, and participates in the layout and display of store merchandise, ensuring stock rotation and desired turnover.
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises the preparation of displays for special promotions or seasons.
  • Notifies warehouse personnel of low-stock items.
  • Places and arranges items in the store, checks displays for neatness and orderliness, rotates stock, and returns items to proper locations.
  • Prepares, processes, and maintains various sales records, tax forms, logs, and social service vouchers.
  • Prepares routine sales reports.
  • Maintains neatness and security of the cash register area and ensures adequate stock of forms and bags.
  • Answers the store telephone, assists customers with questions and information, and may schedule donation pick-ups.
  • Cleans display racks, shelves, floors, windows, and mirrors to maintain a clean and inviting store.
  • Opens and/or closes store doors in accordance with the store schedule.
  • Performs other related work as required.
