Thoracic Surgical Assistant
About The Position
Loyola Medicine, a member of Trinity Health, is a nationally ranked academic, quaternary care system based in Chicago's western suburbs. The system includes three hospitals and additional locations offering primary, specialty, and immediate care services. The Thoracic Surgical Assistant provides technical assistance under the direct supervision of the surgeon to help achieve optimal patient outcomes. Clinical duties include positioning patients, preparing skin, performing endoscopic vein harvest, visualizing the operative site, assisting with hemostasis and closure of body planes, selecting and applying dressings and splints, and assisting with thoracic organ procurement.
Requirements
- High school diploma, plus training acquired through work experience or education.
- Certification by the American Board of Surgical Assistants.
- State of Illinois Surgical Assistant license.
- Basic Life Support certification.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical assistance under the direct supervision of the surgeon during operations.
- Position patients and prepare the skin.
- Perform endoscopic vein harvest.
- Provide visualization of the operative site.
- Assist with hemostasis and closure of body planes.
- Select and apply dressings and splints.
- Assist with thoracic organ procurement.
