Thoracic Surgical Assistant
About The Position
Loyola Medicine, a member of Trinity Health, is a nationally ranked academic, quaternary care system based in Chicago’s western suburbs. The system includes Loyola University Medical Center, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, MacNeal Hospital, and convenient locations providing primary, specialty, and immediate care across Cook, Will, and DuPage counties. The Thoracic Surgical Assistant provides technical assistance under the direct supervision of the surgeon to help carry out operations with optimal patient results. Clinical work includes positioning patients, preparing skin, endoscopic vein harvesting, and visualizing the operative site. The assistant also supports hemostasis, closure of body planes, selection and application of dressings and splints, and thoracic organ procurement.
Requirements
- High school diploma plus training acquired through work experience or education.
- Certification by the American Board of Surgical Assistants.
- State of Illinois Surgical Assistant license.
- Basic Life Support certification.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical assistance under the direct supervision of the surgeon during operations.
- Position patients and prepare the skin.
- Perform endoscopic vein harvesting.
- Provide visualization of the operative site.
- Assist with hemostasis and closure of body planes.
- Select and apply dressings and splints.
- Assist with thoracic organ procurement.
