Thermodynamics Engineer, Chiller New Product Development

XNRGY Climate SystemsMesa, AZ
Onsite

About The Position

As XNRGY scales its chiller portfolio, we need a dedicated thermodynamics expert embedded in the NPD team to accelerate product development cycles, improve system efficiency, and ensure our chiller architectures meet the rigorous performance and reliability standards demanded by hyperscale operators.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering required
  • 5–8 years of progressive experience in HVAC or chiller system design and development
  • Deep expertise in vapor compression cycles, heat transfer, psychrometrics, and fluid mechanics
  • Hands-on experience with chiller modeling tools (e.g., REFPROP, Coolpack, or proprietary simulation platforms)
  • Working knowledge of low-GWP refrigerants (R-454B, R-32, R-1234ze, R-513A)
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE Standards (15, 34, 90.1) and AHRI performance certification requirements
  • Experience in an engineered-to-order or custom manufacturing environment

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. with thermodynamics or thermal-fluids concentration strongly preferred
  • Exposure to data center cooling applications, including free cooling, economizer modes, and liquid cooling (CDU, rear-door, immersion)
  • Knowledge of PUE optimization and hyperscaler thermal infrastructure requirements
  • PE license or active pursuit

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize chiller system architectures using advanced thermodynamic principles, including vapor compression cycles, heat exchanger design, and refrigerant selection for low-GWP compliance
  • Build, validate, and continuously improve chiller performance models; execute thermodynamic cycle simulations across full operating envelopes including part-load and off-design conditions
  • Design and specify refrigerant piping, hydraulic circuits, and associated structural components in compliance with ASHRAE, AHRI, and applicable safety standards
  • Active contributor across the full new product development process: concept generation, feasibility analysis, prototype testing, performance validation, and production release
  • Define and execute calorimeter and field test protocols; analyze results and drive design iterations to meet performance targets
  • Partner closely with controls engineers, manufacturing engineers, procurement, and product management to ensure designs are producible, cost-effective, and on schedule
  • Monitor competitive chiller technology trends and emerging refrigerant regulations to inform roadmap decisions
  • Produce engineering calculations, technical reports, and design documentation to support certification and customer submittals

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401K
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Paid time off
