Thermal R&D Engineer

Airsys Cooling TechnologiAnderson, SC

About The Position

AEGIS is seeking a motivated Junior Thermal R&D Engineer to support advanced research and product development in two-phase fluid flow and heat transfer for passive and actively pumped thermal management systems. This role will work closely with senior engineering staff to translate fundamental research into high-performance electronic cooling products, supporting both internal R&D initiatives and collaborative projects with university and national laboratory partners. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career thermal/mechanical engineer to develop deep technical expertise in advanced cooling technologies while contributing to real-world product development, experimental research, and customer-facing design work.

Requirements

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field (minimum); Ph.D. preferred.
  • Solid foundation in heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics.
  • Familiarity with CFD and/or FEA software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent or equivalent).
  • Working knowledge of a scripting/analysis tool such as Python/Matlab.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework, thesis, or project experience in two-phase flow, boiling heat transfer, or electronics cooling.
  • Exposure to experimental test setup, instrumentation, or data acquisition systems.
  • Prior internship or research experience in a national lab or university research environment.
  • Interest in pursuing technical publications and conference presentations.

Responsibilities

  • Support advanced research activities in direct liquid cooling (single/two-phase fluid flow) and heat transfer for passive and actively pumped thermal management systems.
  • Assist in translating fundamental research findings into the development of innovative, high-performance electronic cooling products.
  • Help evaluate customer application requirements and contribute to physics-based thermal design concepts.
  • Conduct theoretical thermal and mechanical analyses, including design sizing and optimization calculations.
  • Perform multiphase conjugate heat transfer CFD simulations under the guidance of senior engineers; interpret results and help identify effective engineering solutions.
  • Apply experimental insights to refine and validate CFD models, and support recommendations for design improvements.
  • Participate in the design and execution of heat transfer experiments, including test planning, instrumentation, data acquisition, and uncertainty analysis.
  • Reduce, analyze, and interpret experimental data to validate and improve designs and simulation models.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to solve complex thermal and mechanical design challenges.
  • Support the preparation of technical proposals, marketing materials, and technical publications.
  • Assist in the selection and evaluation of materials and components for advanced cooling systems and products.
  • Support engagement with academic and research partners under the direction of senior technical staff.
