Thermal and Fluid Systems Engineer

Cummins•Columbus, IN
•$79,200 - $118,800

About The Position

This entry-level/early-career applied science position applies core competencies in thermal and fluid sciences and advances analytical and experimental approaches to answer questions about system or component performance and architecture. The work supports decisions and technical content that lead to effective, environmentally friendly, competitive products. The engineer investigates thermal- and fluid-science-related product, system, and technology problems; identifies causal mechanisms; recommends actions; owns problem resolution; and documents results with guidance from experienced team members. The role applies and supports the improvement of engineering processes and uses thermal and fluid science tools to enable high-quality decisions. It gathers input from stakeholders and provides information and recommendations for project decisions, further analysis, design optimization, feasibility studies, and architecture definition. The position makes day-to-day project decisions involving analysis, testing, and stakeholder communication. It owns resolution of moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services, with technical complexity and ambiguity increasing as experience grows. The engineer independently executes established work processes while developing product and technology knowledge, contributes to process improvement and team goals, and may coordinate technicians or temporary student employees. Direct people management is minimal. A Master's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field is required. The position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations. Cummins identifies this as an exempt entry-level role for candidates within two years of completing their highest degree who reside in the continental United States. F-1 visa students in U.S.-based roles must secure degree-related CPT or OPT authorization before the assignment begins.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field.
  • Education program in mechanical, chemical, or electrical/electronic engineering.
  • Understand the basics of diesel aftertreatment functioning, including DOC/DPF.
  • Ability to understand feature logic using Simulink models.
  • Ability to run test cells to collect ATS information and analyze test-cell data.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex problems and develop systematic solutions.
  • Ability to resolve issues using data-driven insights and logical reasoning.
  • For U.S. exempt entry-level eligibility, be within two years of completing the highest degree at an accredited U.S. college or university and currently reside within the continental U.S.
  • F-1 visa students in U.S.-based roles must have degree-related CPT or OPT authorized by their university before the assignment begins.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant experience in temporary student employment, such as an internship or co-op, extracurricular team activities, or as an early-career professional in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate product, system, and technology problems related to thermal and fluid sciences; understand causal mechanisms, recommend actions, own problem resolution, and document results.
  • Apply and support improvement of engineering processes, including PPP, PPT, VPI, VPC, ESW, and FEP.
  • Use thermal and fluid science tools and systems to support engineering processes and high-quality decision-making.
  • Obtain input from stakeholders and provide information and recommendations to support project decisions, analysis, design optimization, feasibility studies, and architecture definition.
  • Make day-to-day project decisions involving analysis, testing, and communication with stakeholders.
  • Own resolution of moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services.
  • Independently execute established work processes and systems while developing product and technology knowledge and contributing to process improvement.
  • Coordinate and direct work among technicians and/or temporary student employees when applicable.
  • Apply fluid dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and energy-conversion principles to interpret and predict system or component performance.
  • Identify and mitigate potential product failure modes and causes to improve product reliability.
  • Use computational tools and methods to model, simulate, and analyze product function and inform design decisions.
  • Solve product problems by determining causes, implementing data-based solutions, and identifying systemic root causes and actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable system requirements, establish acceptance criteria, track requirements, assess changes, and maintain links to related artifacts.
  • Define system boundaries, context, interfaces, and lifecycle; analyze system interactions and predict behavior to guide modifications.
  • Analyze technical data using statistical methods, including graphical analysis, statistical inference, regression, analysis of variance, and design of experiments.
  • Document technical knowledge and communicate it to stakeholders to support productivity and knowledge transfer.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, execute, monitor, and communicate product development activities while managing project risks and product capability expectations.
  • Specify or understand control features and architectures that connect software with mechanical, hydraulic, chemical, and electronic systems.
