About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin’s mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design. In this role you will own heat rejection systems for power system products and serve as POC for thermal design and analysis. Responsibilities include generating conceptual designs for heat rejection systems and performing design trades to inform product definition, performing system and component level thermal analysis to verify product requirements, evaluating and selecting appropriate analysis tools to find a balance between model fidelity and delivery timeline, presenting analysis results to stakeholders and providing input to program schedule. This role requires high level of ownership, comfort with ambiguity and an ability to find a path forward. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or other relevant fields.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in thermal design and analysis.
  • Expertise in thermal analysis and heat transfer fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with thermal analysis software (Ansys, Thermal Desktop).
  • Experience developing models and post-processing using Matlab and Python.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft thermal control systems and thermal environments in space.
  • Familiarity working with mission design parameters to drive thermal control system requirements and design.
  • Ability to effectively learn and apply novel technical concepts.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and challenges with other engineering disciplines to drive effective decisions.
  • Experience working directly with system and design engineers.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with system ownership from concept design to test execution.
  • Experience with defining system boundaries and establishing boundary condition exchange process between multiple sub-models.
  • Experience with material selection for thermal insulation and thermal interface applications.
  • Experience in leveraging AI tools to build custom analysis models and automation scripts.
  • Experience with multi-physics system modeling and multi-point optimization.
  • Experience with spacecraft radiator and associated sub-system design and analysis.
  • Experience with thermal testing (instrumentation, data acquisition, data processing, test to thermal model correlation).
  • Experience with pumped fluid loop systems (design and analysis).
  • Familiarity with heat pipe design, analysis and vehicle integration.
  • Familiarity with nuclear environments and effects.
