About The Position

This internship is for a Master's level student preparing for licensure as a mental health practitioner, with a primary focus on clinical practice. The intern will work in a residential substance abuse treatment facility serving women and young children. Responsibilities include providing mental health and substance abuse assessment and treatment for families, as well as child and family programming. This is an entry-level professional position requiring decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Requirements

Substantial completion of coursework
Strong understanding of at least two prevalent theories of therapeutic treatment and readiness to apply to practice
Personal stability and maturity
Prior human service experience
Master's level preparation for licensure as a mental health practitioner

Responsibilities

Serves as an intern in a residential substance abuse treatment facility that serves women and young children.
Provides mental health and substance abuse assessment and treatment for families residing in the program.
Includes child and family programming.
Determines whether a client is appropriate for agency services and the needed level of care, referring to appropriate services (internal or external).
Conducts a comprehensive pre-treatment assessment, including 5-axis diagnostic impression and treatment recommendations, referring if other services are needed.
Establishes a treatment plan with client participation, specifying treatment structure, outcomes, goals, and objectives within the first two sessions.
Provides educational workshops, classes, and presentations on family life and other related topics as assigned.
Provides counseling to individuals, couples, and families in group or individual settings within the framework of the treatment plan and monitors progress.
Provides mental health crisis intervention as needed.
Meets clinical requirements of third-party payers (authorizations, reviews, documentation) and provides information necessary for prompt and accurate billing.
Maintains relationships with referral sources.
Coordinates care when provided by multiple practitioners.
Refers to other Heartland Family Service programs and other community services as necessary, either concurrently with services or for aftercare, and follows up to complete the referral.
