Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders. Spanning over 20,000 square feet, the BJ Roberts Behavioral Health Center is designed to serve individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. It offers a range of urgent care services, including therapy, medication management, suicide prevention, and crisis intervention. Unlike traditional emergency rooms, the facility emphasizes a peaceful and therapeutic atmosphere.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Social Work or Counseling.
  • One (1) year of clinical experience, particularly in therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention, and case management.
  • Must provide proof of registration for supervision toward licensure with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals (LPC or LCSW) with 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to develop individualized, behaviorally specific treatment plans and behavioral contracts.
  • Ability to form diagnostic impressions using DSM-5 criteria.
  • Thorough understanding of substance abuse and its effects.
  • Proficiency in drug education curriculum development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Plays a pivotal role in managing a diverse caseload of clients facing mental illness and substance-related disorders.
  • Delivers rapid assessment, evaluation, and crisis intervention within a multidisciplinary framework.
  • Ensures that clients receive high-quality psychiatric and medical monitoring.
  • Utilizes a brief stay approach to address acute symptoms and prevent hospitalization.
  • Provides psychoeducation and therapeutic services in both individual and group settings.
  • Develops tailored treatment and discharge plans.
  • Conducts thorough initial assessments.
  • Implements innovative treatment modalities to meet the specialized needs of each client.
  • Consults with other professionals and coordinates community resources for effective case management.
  • May offer guidance to mental health techs and peer recovery specialists.
