About The Position

The Therapeutic Recreationist works across multiple sites within the CYMH Outpatient and Inpatient Programs. As a member of the health care team, the Therapeutic Recreationist applies specialized therapeutic recreation knowledge and skills to support participation, functional independence, and optimal quality of life for children and youth receiving mental health services. The role includes assessment, treatment planning, program development, implementation, and evaluation, as well as capacity building with community partners. A strong understanding of effective strategies for working with pediatric mental health populations and collaborating with community partners and volunteers is essential.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a recognized Recreation Therapy Certificate or Diploma program from an accredited community college.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and recent years of therapeutic experience in the field of pediatric mental health services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the population of children and youth served by the Child and Youth Mental Health Program.
  • Demonstrated ability to modify tasks, promote independence and maximize participation in children and youth with mental health conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate a clear understanding of the Therapeutic Recreation role and outreach services to client/ family/staff as required.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment and clinical reasoning skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on an interdisciplinary team in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children individually and in a group setting.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, communication, problem solving, organizational skills, and conflict resolutions skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform repetitive bending, reaching, pushing, lifting and transferring using proper/safe body mechanics.
  • Demonstrated computer skills (e.g., email, word processing, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability and enthusiasm in working with children and their families.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC).
