About The Position

The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is responsible for providing therapeutic recreation services to rehabilitation patients, primarily covering inpatients in the inpatient rehab unit. This role involves performing recreation co-treats with PT, OT, and SLP, leading community recreation outings, driving a van for patient transport, coordinating the animal-assisted therapy program and facility dog handler visits, and collaborating with the music therapist for events and activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Administration; or related field
  • Certification with the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification

Responsibilities

  • Delivers appropriate therapy at a competent level and according to the needs of age of the patient/patient population served.
  • Performs initial evaluation of patients to determine appropriate plan.
  • Plans recreational activities, including necessary arrangements for space, materials, and transportation, and notifying members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Leads/co-leads leisure groups and activities.
  • Maintains required departmental records including written evaluation, weekly progress notes, and participation in activities.
  • Maintains a listing of community resources.
  • Assesses daily charges for assigned patients.
  • Presents relevant special topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, university settings, and meetings as delegated or requested by the faculty.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff, and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency.
  • Supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization.
  • Serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences.
