About The Position

Develops, implements, and supervises inclusive special needs programs and events for children and adults with a variety of disabilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation, special education, or closely related field
  • Minimum of one (1) year working with special populations
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must be computer literate, skilled with Microsoft Office products and possess the ability to learn software used by the Town.
  • Must possess a valid SC driver’s license.
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees, develops, and implements special population programs and events by conducting community surveys; planning activities; reserving facility space; managing program and activity schedules; ordering supplies; evaluating programs; preparing activity and attendance reports.
  • Schedules and supervises part-time employees and volunteers as necessary.
  • Interacts and collaborates with a variety of groups and individuals including Town staff, community groups, volunteers, outside agencies/organizations, and the general public regarding recreation programs, activities, and events providing excellent customer service.
  • Coordinates with Town departments and officials to effectively communicate information about Town programs, activities, and events while providing excellent customer service.
  • Participates in special projects and assignments by assisting Town employees in ADA training, creating procedures and guidelines, or similar tasks.
  • Creates marketing materials including flyers, brochures and social media graphics to promote programs, activities, and events.
  • Makes purchases for programs, events and activities. Tracks expenditures and prepares records and reports.
  • Assists participants as needed with physical needs - ambulating, toileting - and with program related activities.
  • Ensures the safety of all programs, activity and event participants and providers by following Town and department policies and procedures and monitoring participation.
  • Responds to telephone and electronic inquiries regarding programs, activities, and events in a timely manner.
  • Solicits funds through grants, fundraising, foundations and private organizations to expand various programs.
  • Operates a personal computer and other general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
  • Assists Marketing and Events Manager as needed with special events.
  • Assists other programmers with programs and camps as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
