About The Position

The Economic Development & Culture division, specifically the EDC Arts & Culture Services section, is seeking a part-time Theatre Technician for the Assembly Hall. This indefinite position involves operating and monitoring sound, lighting, and audio-visual equipment for various events, including rehearsals, performances, conferences, and special events. The role requires overseeing technical aspects of live performances, managing technical load-in, set-up, production, and wrap-out. The technician will collaborate with external technical staff, perform maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment, and assist with building security, front of house services, and client services. Additionally, the role includes setting up and taking down furniture and equipment, opening and closing facilities, and attending staff meetings and training to ensure a safe workplace. The technician will also provide direction to patrons and staff during emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited post-secondary program in technical theatre or the equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Experience running computerized sound and lighting boards in a live theatre setting
  • Experience providing ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting on sound and lighting equipment in a live theatre setting
  • Experience in lighting equipment hanging, focussing, level-setting, and other technical aspects of performance pre-production
  • Experience setting up and operating various types of AV equipment, including but not limited to projectors, portable sound systems, etc.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with external staff, facility clients, volunteers, and the public.
  • Resourceful, proactive and possess a high degree of common sense and initiative.
  • Excellent problem solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills with the ability to manage difficult situations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and respond proactively to client requests.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD LT 2026.
  • Ability to perform moderately strenuous physical tasks, including table and chair set ups.
  • Personnel Lift training or a willingness to complete this training, at own expense.
  • Fall Arrest/Working at Heights training or a willingness to complete this training, at own expense.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR training or a willingness to complete this training, at own expense.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the provisions that apply to this work.

Nice To Haves

  • Stage carpentry and/or rigging experience is an asset.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who can verify that they have current certifications in Fall Arrest/Working at Heights, Personnel Lift and First Aid training.

Responsibilities

  • Performs or monitors the operation of sound, lighting and audio-visual equipment during rehearsals, performances, conferences and special events
  • Oversees the technical aspects of live performances occurring at City of Toronto cultural facilities
  • Performs or monitors all tasks related to technical load-in, set-up, production and wrap-out
  • Works collaboratively with external technical staff onsite, including both professional and amateur staff, provided by various rental groups
  • Provides ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting, related to sound and lighting equipment
  • Works with staff in the provision of building security, front of house services, fire safety and evacuation, event assistance, and client service for events occurring at City of Toronto cultural facility
  • Provides direction to theatre patrons and staff in emergency situations within the theatre
  • Set ups and/or takes down furniture and equipment for various events
  • Opens, closes and monitors facilities during hours of operation
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings, training sessions and fire drills to help ensure a safe workplace
