About The Position

The Theatre Technical Director is responsible for providing instructional support services to faculty and students enrolled in the Theatre Arts programs and courses. The Technical Director is also responsible for the coordination of the technical needs of the show - materials for the set, lights, sound, equipment rentals, and special sound effects needs. In addition, the Technical Director is responsible for the maintenance of the Theatre Arts workshop, including maintaining supplies, tools, and equipment.

Requirements

• Completion of Theatre Arts Diploma plus specialized training in carpentry, electrical and audio production.
• 4 years recent related experience as a technical director or other related technical theatre experience.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
• Experience in carpentry, rigging, and welding.
• Experience as a scenic, lighting, prop or sound designer.
• Experience in building large scale scenery, working with mobile scenery, counterweight systems, turn tables, wagons, drops, and special effects.
• Knowledge in stage lighting, drapery, audio-visual equipment, theatre maintenance procedures, etc.
• Knowledge and experience of Health & Safety operations and requirements, including WHMIS safety standards and practices.
• Knowledge of the maintenance and repair trades involved in the servicing of equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to prioritize and schedule work to ensure timelines are met.
• Effective supervisory and leadership skills.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with others within the College and particularly external theatre communities.
• Ability to operate lighting and sound equipment, carpentry tools, welding equipment, power tools, etc.
• Ability to provide clear instructions to students, and other technical crew members.
• Ability to read and build from working drawings; i.e. ground plans, side elevations, rear elevations, etc.
• Ability to build in a safe, quick, and economical manner.
• Valid Class 5 BC driver's license required.
• Ability to travel within the College region and will require the use of Studio 58 truck.

Responsibilities

• Provides instructional support services to faculty and students in the Theatre Workshop, including demonstrating technical processes, supervising workshop activity for safety, responding to inquiries, providing information on learning resources, setting up technical equipment, assisting in class and program activities, and assisting/assessing students in crew work and projects.
• Responsible for technical needs for Studio 58 productions including lighting design and sound setup, and other stage equipment. This includes managing and directing student crews, estimating costing for technical needs, overseeing construction and set-up of sets, hanging and focusing lighting plots, operating and maintaining rigging, planning and building special effects, coordinating prop construction, transporting sets and props, participating in scene change choreography, coordinating scenery with lighting design, and overseeing the strike of sets and lighting.
• Performs general maintenance of the Theatre Arts facilities and workshops, including maintaining and operating the scene shop, power tools, and storage areas. Also maintains and organizes technical facilities and equipment, borrows/rents items for productions, loans equipment to other theatre companies, ensures adequate supplies, records inventory, coordinates sign-in/out logs, performs standard maintenance and repair tasks for tools and equipment, makes recommendations for capital expenditures, maintains a clean and safe workshop, and liaises with groups utilizing workshop services. Picks up theatre materials, props, tools, and equipment using the Studio 58 vehicle.
• Provides instruction to work-study students, assigns students to crew work, prepares time sheets, and oversees technical rehearsals.
• Performs other related duties and projects as required.
