About The Position

The Technical Director is a one-year, part-time appointment that will end May 31, 2027. The Technical Director will work an average of 18 hours/week, for 15 weeks in the fall semester and 15 weeks in the spring semester. The Technical Director will be responsible for the construction of scenery and complex props, and furniture for all shows in the FHU Theatre season. The technical director will also oversee scenic painting. Additionally, the technical director will be responsible for the maintenance of the scene shop and theatre storage and will train and oversee student volunteers and student workers. The Technical Director will also maintain our theater spaces, both the Dryden Auditorium stage, and the Black Box Theater.

Requirements

  • Four-year college or university program certificate; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Must effectively communicate and coordinate events and schedules involving different groups of people, both students and FHU employee’s.
  • College level Algebra.
  • Knowledge of geometry, trig, and physics is a plus.
  • Must be able to calculate distances using the “Old English System.” (Inches & Feet)
  • Ability to apply common sense.
  • Able to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with multiple problems simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
  • Regularly required to talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Construction of scenery and complex props, and furniture for all shows in the FHU Theatre season.
  • Oversee scenic painting.
  • Maintenance of the scene shop and theatre storage.
  • Train and oversee student volunteers and student workers.
  • Maintain theater spaces, including the Dryden Auditorium stage and the Black Box Theater.
  • Manage the scene shop as well as a team of student workers, scheduling time and delegating tasks.
  • Provide training and oversight on all power tools.
  • Maintain the organization and cleanliness of the shop.
  • Attend weekly production meetings for each production.
  • Working with the director of Theatre, create production schedules for each show.
  • Complete construction draftings based on the provided scenic designs.
  • Problem-solve the execution of other special requirements for the productions.
