Test Systems Engineer, Test Excellence

Applied Materials•Austin, TX
•$116,000 - $159,500

About The Position

The Test Systems Engineer, Test Excellence, turns real-world failures and emerging risks into test solutions that prevent defects from reaching Applied Materials factories and customers. The role owns test solutions from identifying assurance gaps and translating failure mechanisms into measurable requirements through concept development, specification, sourcing, build, bring-up, validation, and production deployment. The engineer develops system-representative test coverage, challenges unsupported legacy practices with evidence, and demonstrates that test solutions detect intended failure modes under production-representative conditions. The role also ensures deployed systems remain effective through maintenance, calibration, configuration control, and performance monitoring. Working across suppliers, factories, and engineering organizations, the engineer leads complex initiatives and builds reusable Test Excellence requirements, methods, standards, and validation practices while mentoring other engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Identify test gaps using field failures, factory nonconformances, failure analysis, 8D findings, FMEA/FMECA risks, and test data.
  • Translate failure mechanisms and operating conditions into specific, measurable test requirements for engineering teams and suppliers.
  • Define functional, parametric, stress, burn-in, thermal, RF, high-voltage, leak, particle, interlock, and other tests to expose targeted failure modes.
  • Evaluate test assumptions, legacy methods, inherited limits, and accepted practices using evidence, engineering judgment, structured problem solving, and experimentation.
  • Own test solutions from concept through sustained deployment, including feasibility, technical concept, specifications, statements of work, cost and schedule, design, sourcing, build, bring-up, validation, and production implementation.
  • Establish correlation, repeatability, reproducibility, measurement capability, calibration requirements, and acceptance criteria; demonstrate test effectiveness with objective evidence under production-representative conditions.
  • Deploy test capability at suppliers and Applied factories; resolve implementation issues, coordinate engineering changes, and ensure solutions are practical, scalable, and production-ready.
  • Define preventive maintenance, calibration, out-of-tolerance response, configuration control, data retention, and performance-monitoring requirements for deployed systems.
  • Monitor detection effectiveness, test-system performance, false failures, escapes, NCs, DMRs, and other quality and operational indicators to verify results and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Use lessons from escapes to improve supplier test mandates, Functional Requirements Documents, FMEA/FMECA, Design for Testability, and product-lifecycle deliverables.
  • Lead complex initiatives across suppliers, factories, Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Supplier Engineering, NPI Quality, Product Quality & Reliability, and business-unit teams; communicate conclusions, risks, decisions, and business impact.
  • Create reusable requirements, methods, standards, specifications, and validation practices; mentor engineers, transfer knowledge, and strengthen organizational Test Excellence capability.

Benefits

  • Supportive work culture that encourages learning, development, and career growth.
  • Programs and support for employee health and wellbeing and personal and professional growth.
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • Potential eligibility for participation in a bonus and stock award program, as applicable.
  • Relocation assistance eligibility.
