About The Position

EMCORE LLC is seeking a Test/Software Engineer for its Research & Design Engineering team. The role ensures rigorous testing of EMCORE inertial sensors, including accelerometers, gyroscopes, and inertial measurement units (IMUs), and supports R&D Engineering and Operations by developing and maintaining software, statistical methods, data systems, and test infrastructure. The engineer serves as a technical resource for design engineering, production, and Customers on sensor test data, performance, and configuration, and translates Customer requirements into executable actions. This is an in-office position at EMCORE’s Quartz MEMS facility in Concord, California. Occasional travel of less than 10% to Customers, suppliers, or other EMCORE facilities may be required. The position is full-time and exempt.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least five years of experience in a test/software engineering role supporting production of electromechanical, sensor, or similarly regulated or high-reliability hardware products; three years with a master's degree.
  • Foundational understanding of verification and validation test approaches for electromechanical devices.
  • Proficiency in C# and/or VB.NET; working knowledge of Python and SQL.
  • Experience with relational databases and query tools, such as SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis tools and methods, such as JMP or equivalent, applied to engineering or test data.
  • Understanding of WIP tracking, data modeling, and production database structures.
  • Ability to balance rigorous verification testing against schedule and business constraints.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to give and receive constructive feedback in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship (U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident).

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with inertial sensors or systems, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and IMUs, or related precision electromechanical products.
  • Understanding of the physics of motion and inertial sensing principles.
  • Experience with PLM systems, such as Windchill, and engineering change control processes.
  • Experience with source control or configuration management tools, such as TFS or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience testing development hardware using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and power supplies.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, enhance, and maintain in-house production test and post-processing software for inertial sensor test stations using C#, VB.NET, and/or Python.
  • Diagnose and resolve software and test-station configuration issues that cause test aborts or invalid post-processing results, including issues affecting multiple stations.
  • Maintain and enhance internal engineering and test utilities in response to requests from Customers and team members.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for production test issues, including aborted test runs, marginal failures, and data anomalies; provide root-cause analysis and corrective guidance to operators.
  • Support disposition of Corrective Action Reports (CARs) and communicate technical findings to internal stakeholders and Customers.
  • Query and analyze production test data to characterize sensor performance, including bias, scale factor, and stability.
  • Perform statistical analysis to support engineering recommendations, including proposed specification-limit changes, and prepare supporting visualizations and presentations.
  • Correlate data across multiple databases and test systems to answer engineering and production questions.
  • Support updates to System Requirements Specifications that reflect approved changes to test limits and methods.
  • Submit and track engineering Change Requests/Notices (CR/CN) through the product lifecycle management (PLM) system.
  • Track and manage software changes through source control in coordination with released requirements changes.
  • Write and maintain test procedures, technical specifications, and verification or summary test reports; generate compliance and Customer-facing documentation.
  • Support special build and test requests for engineering units and non-standard production flows.
  • Review Design Validation Testing (DVT) and Qualification Testing data to assess compliance with internal product requirements and Customer specifications.
  • Support project planning and proposal efforts by estimating resources, timelines, and costs.
  • Develop and present materials for design reviews and test readiness reviews.
  • Maintain accurate sensor build, test, and inventory records across production databases, including Work in Process (WIP) tracking.
  • Support data integrity between engineering, production, and configuration databases.
  • Respond to technical inquiries from design engineers, production, and Customers regarding sensor specifications, calibration, and output characteristics.
  • Support special data requests and historical research for design and production engineering.
  • Support Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs) with Customers.
