Test Engineer

Hadrian Automation•Torrance, CA
•$135,000 - $220,000

About The Position

Hadrian is hiring a Test Engineer to serve as the responsible engineer and technical lead for proof and functional testing on a large manufacturing program for complex weldments. The role will establish the program’s test strategy from the ground up, determine how requirements are tested, and make technical decisions balancing cost, schedule, quality, and safety. The engineer will lead the design and integration of test equipment, ensure testing is safe, and coordinate the engineers and technicians who build and run tests. The program is currently in development, with scope expected to grow as it enters production. The Test Engineer will build test capabilities that may take 6 to 12 months to establish, support first articles, transfer tests to production, and set standards for future programs. The role works across build engineering, factory automation, factory planning, production, and workforce training to keep testing aligned with manufacturing needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, aerospace, or chemical engineering.
  • At least 5 years of experience in test, launch, controls, integration, or fluid systems engineering.
  • Deep pressure-testing experience, including planning, running, and signing off on hydrostatic or proof tests on large, complex hardware.
  • Strong command of pressure-system design, including P&IDs, relief sizing, stored energy, and applicable codes such as ASME BPVC Section VIII, B31.3, and PCC-2.
  • Experience specifying, installing, and commissioning test equipment and data acquisition systems, such as NI, Dewesoft, HBK, or similar.
  • Experience with test automation in Python, LabVIEW, or similar.
  • A record of leading test programs or cross-functional projects from start to finish.
  • Ability to make and defend tradeoffs involving cost, schedule, quality, and safety with customers and internal teams, and to recognize when to change course.
  • Ability to travel to other sites and support occasional nights and weekends around test events.

Nice To Haves

  • System-level testing on hardware more complex than a single pressure vessel.
  • Experience designing, building, and commissioning pressure test equipment.
  • Experience establishing a new test lab or test capability from scratch.
  • Experience building or maintaining hydraulic systems.
  • Experience leading failure investigations and root-cause corrective action.
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers or technicians.
  • Time on console for test or launch operations.
  • Background in auto racing, aerospace testing, or launch.
  • Experience in a regulated manufacturing environment with strict reporting and traceability requirements, such as AS9100 or ASME code work.
  • Experience with 5S or a similar program in a high-mix shop.
  • Experience hosting customer or third-party witness tests.

Responsibilities

  • Own the test strategy and test plan for every program requirement, from customer specification through the final data package.
  • Interpret customer test specifications and negotiate changes when needed.
  • Lead selection, purchase, and integration of hydrostatic, proof, and functional test equipment into the work center.
  • Design custom pressure systems, fixtures, and data acquisition systems when off-the-shelf solutions are unsuitable.
  • Own test safety, including hazard analysis, stored-energy calculations, and engineering controls.
  • Set data collection, labeling, storage, and traceability requirements, and work with controls, software, and data teams to build supporting tools.
  • Write test automation, process plans, work orders, and training materials, and establish team standards.
  • Hand tests off to production with clear acceptance and rejection criteria and trained technicians.
  • Deliver complete test data packages to customers demonstrating compliance with agreed requirements.
  • Lead customer reviews and witness tests.
  • Mentor engineers and technicians in pressure testing, test design, and safety.
  • Coordinate with build engineering, factory automation, factory planning, production, and workforce training to keep testing aligned with the build and prevent production delays while awaiting test results.
