About The Position

The Specialist, Terminal Planning focuses on the future development of Calgary Airport's terminal facilities. This includes planning how passenger spaces, gates, processing areas, curbside facilities, parking interfaces, and terminal amenities evolve to support future demand and operational needs. Working closely with operational teams, airport partners, government agencies, and consultants, this role develops planning scenarios and recommendations that help shape future capital projects and feed directly into Calgary Airports' Master Plan.

Requirements

  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a RAIC.
  • College degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Airport Planning, Architecture, Engineering, or a related discipline. Relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • 4 to 6 years of experience in airport planning, municipal planning, transportation planning, infrastructure planning, facility planning, architecture, engineering consulting, or a related planning environment.
  • Experience developing or contributing to master plans, functional plans, facility plans, transportation plans, land use plans, infrastructure plans, or similar planning initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze demand, capacity, operational requirements, and spatial constraints to support planning recommendations and future development strategies.
  • Experience evaluating how people, vehicles, infrastructure, or facilities move through and interact within complex environments to support planning and design decisions.
  • Ability to develop and assess planning scenarios, evaluate alternatives, and recommend practical solutions that balance operational, stakeholder, and long-term planning considerations.
  • Experience working with internal stakeholders, consultants, operators, government agencies, and technical subject matter experts to gather requirements and develop planning solutions.
  • Working knowledge of project management principles, including coordinating multiple stakeholders, managing timelines, and supporting planning projects through completion.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex planning concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of planning principles, industry standards, regulatory requirements, and design considerations applicable to airport, municipal, transportation, infrastructure, or facility planning environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develops terminal master plans and functional plans by evaluating future passenger demand, operational requirements, and infrastructure constraints and translating them into phased planning strategies and development options.
  • Develops terminal layouts and space allocation plans that determine how gates, passenger seating areas, concessions, amenities, hold rooms, washrooms, and other terminal functions should evolve to support future growth.
  • Analyzes passenger demand forecasts, peak-hour activity, and operational data to identify future terminal capacity requirements and infrastructure needs.
  • Evaluates the capacity and performance of key passenger processing areas, including check-in, security screening, boarding lounges, arrivals, baggage systems, and passenger circulation spaces, to identify future constraints and opportunities.
  • Leads and supports terminal planning studies related to gate planning, passenger flow, terminal reconfigurations, facility expansions, and other strategic planning initiatives.
  • Creates and maintains planning information, data, assumptions, and documentation used to support terminal planning activities and long-term decision-making.
  • Reviews consultant-produced studies, drawings, reports, and planning models to validate assumptions, assess feasibility, and ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Engages operational, commercial, infrastructure, and regulatory stakeholders to gather requirements, test planning scenarios, and build consensus on recommended solutions.
  • Prepares technical reports, planning presentations, and planning recommendations that communicate findings, options, risks, and proposed solutions to various audiences.
  • Works with architects, engineers, designers, and project teams to translate planning concepts into future airport development and infrastructure projects.
